Premiere: Carlo - Kynf (Good Ratio Music)

Akase is the new collaborative project from Harry Agius (aka producer Midland) and songwriter/vocalist Robbie Redway. After meeting at Leeds University, the pair have been busy working together behind the scenes, building a selection of sublime tracks to present to the world that exist in the innovative cracks between musical boundaries. Influenced as much by Leeds sound-system and Dub culture as Depeche Mode or the wide electronic soundscapes of Jon Hopkins, Akase's latest single, Murmur, plays with ideas akin to both ‘Violator’-era Depeche Mode with a palette that nods to Midland's recent Aus Music releases. Opening with a driving bassline and soft, hazy acoustics, ‘Leave The Light On’ displays Sailor & I’s flair for building multi-layered soundscapes through the use of delicate instrumentation and intricate rhythmic patterns. His distinctive voice, itself a standout feature of all his work to date, lends heart to the track too, relaying a sense of emotional immediacy sometimes lost in translation on records that look to strike a chord within both live and electronic settings. That said, his glossy, synth-rich sound design on euphoric B-side ‘A Tiger In My Hands’ is equally as impressive, itself a track defined by it's shiny, bubbling melodies and complex percussive textures. Thoughtful and insular in the best possible sense, ‘Leave The Light On’ thus feels like a fitting introduction to the beautiful, melancholy world of Sailor & I.

The age of the three-minute pop song may well still be upon us yet it is only once we free ourselves from these restraining shackles that we're able to delve a little longer into a song. Imagine that everything in your life that used to take three minutes was now drawn out by an extra ten minutes. True, it would make things like boiling the kettle an awful lot harder but surely it would also give you an appreciation for the little things in life, no?

Just think about how much time it would give you to explore the world if you had that precious time while you wait for the mundanities of everyday life to be done. You can flick the switch to start boiling your cuppa and then go out into the world for a brief stroll, meeting new people and seeing new sights. Of course, the downside is that if you've got a bit of a short fuse then you might get rather wound up indeed.
