The Virus signed duo, Optiv & BTK have been astonishing people with their rugged and venomous take on dancefloor drum & bass sonics for a number of years now. Hailing from England and Brazil respectively, they burst through in a bit of a flurry, releasing on respected labels like Commercial Suicide and Renegade Hardware but, a little more importantly for our purposes today, they just released their second album on Virus yesterday. Called Blackjack, it's a 13 track collection of their hard edged production style, something already they're lined up to share with us in Room Two on the 11th July when they'll touch down to showcase the album material. Ahead of that (and to properly mark the album's release) they've dropped us an exclusive stream of 'Shredder'...

Today we’re lucky enough to be premiering what someone in the office just referred to as a ‘serious nugget.’ Yeah, OK, so that person was me. And yes, I did say it to myself, in my head, after listening to it over and over again; but the fact remains and it is what it is. The Critical Music signed drum & bass producer, Emperor’s'She Said VIP’ – which will be exclusively available from the Critical store this Monday – is superlatively frenetic, heaving it’s way out of the rousing build up introduction with the sort of lurching industrial bassline that’ll set most dancefloors afire. The full Into Black EP will be released on vinyl and digital this coming Monday, but we’re toasting the publication of the EP’s pre-order link here today because it ties in nicely with the fact that we recently announced the next Critical Sound date (10th July) where you’ll be able to witness Emperor going B2B with The Upbeats.

Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. And after dominating the Beatport Top 100 with their most recent single ‘A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders’, they won’t be applying the brakes anytime soon, especially in the lead up to their greatly anticipated second album on the Ram imprint.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. They’re not scared to dip into unfamiliar territories, with Calyx’s cool vocals sitting on top of lulling guitar rhythms to provide the first part of a diverse and brilliantly crafted record. 

‘Sawn Off’ rolls out next; it’s a grittier track than its predecessor, with a conundrum of hi-hats and aggressive drum patterns. Pounding pads take you towards a colossal break, heighten by the effect of a cleverly placed sample. The track ricochets throughout, not losing momentum or impact, with an intricately weaved structure, one only achievable by a team who’ve been running the game for decades.  

With an album laying just out of reach, each single is bringing us closer and closer to the inevitable. All four tracks prove they’re still a formidable force to be reckoned with; this LP will only emphasise that fact.
