Anar Badalov is New Dog, but Classic Ballroom Dances is no trick; this intimate and enthralling album is the next installment in the career of this promising young songwriter. Born in Baku, Azerbaijan in the 80s, Anar’s family immigrated to Baltimore, MD during the breakup of the Soviet Union. Anar grew up in Baltimore and was in two notable bands, Metal Hearts and Travels, between 2004 and 2014.

With the dissolution of Travels, Anar began working on his own for the first time. Classic Ballroom Dances, like the first New Dog album Lost Weekend, was recorded alone in his apartment. Anar describes the process: “Not having someone to lean on, musically, is both terrifying and doubly rewarding. You work at your own pace, and set your own rules.”

The title was inspired by the poem of the same name by Yugoslavian poet Charles Simic. Simic has said that list poems like Classic Ballroom Dances are “the poetic equivalent of quilt-making.” Long before Anar read this poem or heard of the poet, this was the way he approached songwriting. “I’d like to think that at least a handful of songs on this album capture something like what Simic is talking about,” he says. Simic is one of Anar’s biggest influences. Others include Lee Hazlewood, Frank O'Hara, Mark Linkous, John Berryman, Raymond Carver, Anton Chekhov, Townes Van Zandt and guitarist Mick Turner.

Perched on a crossroads, Pin Up Club approaches electronic music with a magpie’s nature. A spread of styles has been picked, plucked and plundered to make ‘Friends Of The Vortex’. The title piece snaps with clean beats as Blade Runner bars build with an energy that can only be described as palpable. Latin percussion and samples get the groove going for ‘Children Of The Void’. Flirting, the tone twirls and turns. Keys are big and full bodied, balanced perfectly by the crack of a snare. ‘Out Of The Unknown’ closes. A slow burning piece brimming with brooding cinematic shapes and strings, a work that shows the colder edge of this dutch duo. Quality through and through.

Transfigure are a duo who are not easily defined. Imagine the vocal qualities of Saint Etienne, the chilling lyrics and melodies of Pet Shop Boys and the guitar riffs and attitude of New Order bound together with plenty of contemporary twists and turns and you’ll be close to picturing Transfigure’s signature sound.
What makes the pairing of Grace Blamire and Lewis Norvid stand out above the rest is their ability to write intricate songs. Structurally complex, fresh and stimulating which build layer upon layer to create a unique sound fit for stadiums.

Their debut album ‘Translation’ encapsulates the inner city pace of Newcastle upon Tyne, in which the pair grew up, through upbeat dance floor fillers such as ‘Tell me’ and ‘No Other Way’. However, you’d be wrong to presume that this is an album destined for nightclubs alone. There are some truly introspective moments throughout, such as the emotional composition ‘Hide Away’ which discusses the urge to shut your door to the rest of the world.

The diverse nature of the 8 track album doesn’t end there, with 7 minute anthem ‘Fields’ highlighting the effect that touring mainland Europe has had on them both and title track ‘Translation’ considering how they can bring their own visions of Europe home to a British society that is slowly drifting further away from reality.

East Wall was an Italian electronic dark wave band formed by Fabrizio Chiari (ex keyboardist of Kirlian Camera) and Wilma Notari in 1982. After a series of demos  and live performances, the duo recruited Angelo Bergamini of Kirlian Camera to help with arrangement and synthesizers. In September 1984 they booked a recording time at Master Studio 33 in Cremona Italy. Working with produced Ray Masola, they recorded their debut single “Eyes Of Glass”, which was released on No Comment in early 1985. The equipment set up was a PPG Wave 2, Roland ProMars, Roland Juno 60, Simmons drum, and an upright piano. “Eyes Of Glass” is an outstanding example of 1980s Italo disco full of dark, moody atmosphere and depth. Wilma Notari’s coy vocals cast a spell on the listener as she weaves a story about lost love and “bitter tears”. Included here are the original extended 12” mix and instrumental version with mid-song breakdown and dubbed out chorus.

All songs are remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Housed in the original jacket featuring a photo of a boy by Pushe 27.  Each copy includes a 2-sided postcard with photos of the band, lyrics, and liner notes by Flemming Dalum.
