Ghost Town

Over the coming months, Unsound will release a series of recordings made at the Krakow festival, including DJ sets and live shows. 

This first is a recording from Slikback, a young Kenyan producer who played for the first time in Europe at Unsound. The recording is from his first of three shows in Kraków, at @szpitalna1. Affiliated to Uganda’s Nyege Nyege and their sublabel Hakuna Kulala, Slikback only started producing 18 months ago, but has so far has made more than 400 tracks including everything that you hear here. This includes a final track that he made just the day before, inspired by the music he'd heard during the preceding days at Unsound! The mix also features a track by Ogniki, his collaborative project with Morgiana Hz (@karolina_karnacewicz), and an opening remix of an upcoming release by Turning Jewels Into Water. 

Slikback is an original voice at the start of what looks set to be a long career - we can’t wait to hear where he goes next!

On July 27th we returned to Nowadays in New York for our second twenty four/seven party. We saw DJ Sprinkles (inside) and Actress (in the garden) playing at sunrise. Aurora Halal tore up the main room. Mister Sunday closed in their own back yard. As we gear up for twenty four/seven London, we’ve revisited some of our favourite memories from the New York edition.

Keith Fullerton Whitman inaugurates the Satellite Mix series with Acid Causality, a blend of recordings made in his home in Fort Greene, Brooklyn. 

"Shortly after returning to New York City in October 2018, I began recording a series of extended pieces applying analogue computing concepts to generate fluid, evolving values that were mapped to formal elements (pitch, rhythm, timing, spatialization, filtering, etc.) normally driven by fixed-value sequencing. 

This mix presents edits of a series of four sessions forged between November 11, 2018 and November 27, 2019: First, a suite of Vocoded kick-drums and sample and hold canon melodies run through a sentient resonator network; then a six-voice wavetable canon with requisite acid bassline and pitched-down drums; then a suite for hand-percussion and modeled metallophones; then a high-feedback karplus-strong wash. 

These were immaculately conceived from the tools on hand and the methodologies of Norbert Wiener, Maatrameru, et. al, although stylistic/traceback shout-outs are in order to Stephan Wittwer's score for Fischli and Weiss' Der Rechte Weg (1983), to Mikel Rouse's Quorum (1984), and to Steve Poindexter's Computer Madness (1989)."
