Fresh from the success of his previous Durkle release 'Karate Club' on Definitions Volume 2 in April, label stalwart Unkey returns to the imprint with the 'Dead & Bury EP'.

The EP’s four tracks resonate with Unkey's signature dark, charged atmospherics, characterized by warping basslines combined with sparse echoing melodies. Title track 'Dead & Bury' recruits Dread MC and Illaman, to complement the murky vibes of the instrumental by firing warning shots at studio gangsters, declaring they don't want “any badman talk”. Rising Mancunian production star Hypho steps up on remix duties, ramping up the darkness of the original even further. The marriage of rolling varied breakbeats and deep sub bass showcased in both 'Waiting in the Wings' (featuring label boss Koast with a spooky cameo) and 'Epic East' illustrate how Unkey has carved a niche as a unique and forward-thinking artist, blending Bristol's sonic traditions of warped dubstep and sparse grime with a mis-spent youth listening to classic Metalheadz cuts.

With radio support from DJs as varied as Toddla T (BBC Radio 1 & 1Xtra), Nemone (BBC Radio 6 Music), Dusk & Blackdown (Keysound/Rinse FM), Murder He Wrote (Radar Radio) and grime duplate king Spooky (Mode FM), 'Dead & Bury' is essential listening, both in the clubs or for those zoned out head-nodding headphone moments.

Sam Böök, better known in the world of forward-thinking sound system music as the elusive Finnish producer Mikael, has built a highly-respected catalog of tunes on Innamind Recordings.  We are proud that he has chosen ZamZam for his first venture on a different label.  

"Nuthin’ A Come" is a massive one drop tune, built with classic dub principles in mind, and contemporary sound system dynamics fully dialed. A huge bassline both rubbery and subby anchors the track, along with sparse drums, hard skanks and relentless spring reverb slaps deployed as percussive elements.  Washes of white noise and a drop into a wide open chasm calls in a double-time kick, taking the tune into steppers territory until a sublime, cinematic outro.  

"Corner Dub” is a bruising yet heady vehicle built from a reggae chassis, scraped up dubstep panels, dusted Jamaican vocal samples, and a thick patina of delay and plaintive melodica.  This one drives to destinations beyond the horizon, taking in the shimmering scenery on the way. 

Both tunes are highly focused, deeply transporting on headphones, and make for carthatic movements in the dance. Enjoy.
