Piece I wrote using only the sounds of machines recorded at an MIT maker space called MakerWorks. Featured sounds include a cold saw, drill bit changing, hanging wrenches, 3D printers, center punch, metal drum, laser cutter and shop vacuum.

MakerWorks

This piece uses only a single sound of ice being dropped into a glass and then having soda poured over it. It explores the sound as a motive with which it extrapolates further in a kind of sonic fugue.

I'd Love To Change The World

This is a piece about those moments in a quiet room where start listening for something intently and you hear a faint tone from seemingly nowhere. This piece is the continuation of that tone. It's what you thought you heard

What You Thought You Heard

Modular Synth Piece inspired by Morton Subotnick

This piece explores the organic sounds created using hardware synthesizers and further, to present a ubiquitous natural experience using those sonorities. The Storm aims to represent watching as grey clouds roll in from the edges of the horizon, darkening above you and finally dissipating into rain.

The Storm

As I get older I sometimes lose sight of some of the magic in the world that I witnessed everywhere as a child; Red and white outlines of highways from break lights and headlights; The way traffic lights cast a shifting shadow in a moving car in a constant rhythm based of the speed we were driving. I often went on road trips with my family through many parts of the US and this piece, Topeka to Omaha, is inspired by memories of riding in the backseat of a car during my childhood.

Topeka To Omaha

Wanted to try something new.  Heard here is a recording of William Jennings Bryan's Immortality speech that he give just before running for president of the US in 1908. He ended up losing but it's still an interesting speech and a surprisingly clear recording given that it happened 110 years ago.

In 1925 Bryan was famously involved with the scopes monkey trial where he spoke against the teaching of evolution in schools and thankfully lost. The trial is also famous for being the first nationally broadcasted in the US; It was heavily followed.  The portion of the speech used here is "If matter, mute and inanimate, though changed by the forces of nature into a multitude of forms, can never die, will the imperial spirit of man suffer annihilation when it had paid a brief visit like a royal guest to this tenement of clay? No, I am as sure that there is another life as I am that I live today." He references forces of nature and the law of conservation of mass and relates it to the spirit of man. It's interesting to me that a man who so staunchly disagreed with such a fundamental scientific thought as evolution still alluded to facts in other areas of scientific study.

My name is Wesley Coleman, I’m a composer and sound artist in the Boston area and a graduate of Berklee College of Music with a double major in Electronic Production and Design and Film Scoring and a minor in Video Game Scoring.
