I attended SyncSummit in Hollywood Sept. 8 and 9. Almost universally among panelists and attendees this royalty free model was viewed as a very bad development for composers.

It is royalty-free for the composer, because the library gets the royalties. It is day labor for composers.

Scandinavia has good social nets, but in the U.S. a composer may have little more than royalties to depend on in their old age.

I thought this was a good podcast, just the right length to keep it engaging. Interesting concept though, I like the idea tbh - you get royalties if a request comes in to use your music in a more major way. A one off payment and some usage could still be good for some that want to at least bolster their resume with 'my track featured here and here', which can only be a good thing right? I see this as a springboard really into bigger things though, rather than hoping that you get a licensing deal off the bat with somebody.

Atlanta born artist, Jerami Goodwin, has been living and working in New York City for the past seven years. With no formal art school or training, he immersed himself in the downtown art scene, and while assisting other young contemporaries, began to create his own work. He has participated in multiple group exhibitions, and, in 2015, Howl Arts in NYC debuted Jerami’s first solo art show “Bowery Hieroglyphs”. Jack Ede is a pencil artist and tattoo apprentice from Sleaford, UK. Some of his latest influences include artists Kelvin Okafor, Michael Zafros and Ashley Oubre, for their photorealistic work. Ede specializes in realism, hyperrealism and photorealism, and for the three pieces he created for North of Nine, he drew most from his personal experiences. First, “The Man I Could Be” inspired him in terms of contrast and duality, and finding light in dark situations. Jack drew inspiration from young ‘puppy love’ for  “Loving You”; and finally, “Changes” reminded him of that the pains he’s endured in difficult situations are temporary and can be overcome with the right mindset.

David Donald Sutherland is an American visual artist based in Los Angeles, who is currently focusing on abstract expressionism. His works are part of the permanent collection at the Berloni Gallery in London, UK, and he also held a solo exhibit at the Castle Fitzjohns Gallery in New York City. For the artwork created in inspiration of North of Nine’s song “Applause”, Sutherland states: “To make any kind of art come alive, one simply needs to isolate the most basic part of oneself which is affected by whatever it is they are drawing from for inspiration and then deliver it through their own expression.”

Dániel Taylor (aka One Man Workshop) is a Hungarian graphic designer specialized in watercolor paintings and double exposures based in Budapest. Coming from an artistic family, Taylor’s influences include Dan LuVisi, Anthony Jones, and Agnes Cecile (Silvia Pelissero). For the art piece inspired by “Something Out of Nothing”, Taylor thought of childhood dreams. In this case, he chose a little boy dreaming of becoming an astronaut with a long path ahead of him, but one that also has endless possibilities.
