Under the Botany moniker, Spencer Stephenson creates rich psychological and emotional experiences through audio. When he started creating his own music at age 15, he was enamored with Four Tet, Stars of the Lid, Madlib, and Dilla. In his late teens, he went through a heavy period of discovery with Psychedelic rock, Krautrock, and Brit-folk. "I started imitating a lot of those forms in my own music, sampling them sometimes, recording from scratch sometimes, but really just trying to bridge a gap between those worlds and sample-based hip hop, and I’m still trying."

On his latest effort Dimming Awe, the Light is Raw, the 27-year-old producer and composer continues dissolving the borders between his disparate-yet-beloved psych, hip hop, and ambient influences. Unlike his debut LP Lava Diviner, which peaked and valley-ed through a narrative arc, Dimming Awe focuses on the artist's ever-unfolding, present state of mind. As a former jazz student, spiritual/free jazz philosophy regarding what he calls “emergent” music has increasingly become a guiding light when he creates. "The more emergent I let my music be when I'm making it, the more I like the result, it feels like a truer reflection. I feel like I am getting closer to doing that with computer-made music," he says. "This album is a document of what I do, not a statement in any explicit way. I feel like I'm moving closer to a jazz underpinning that I've always felt, philosophically more than aesthetically…making music feels more like exhaling as I grow older.”

As modern life spirals further into chaos and confusion, David Vassalotti’s newest album Broken Rope, a follow-up to his revered out-of-print 2011 LP Book of Ghosts, presents itself as a soundtrack for the tumult

Vassalotti, a Florida-based songwriter and performer for critically acclaimed 4AD signees Merchandise (amongst numerous other projects), has used this record as an opportunity to delve further into his own diverse world of personal interests. Broken Rope is a passion project, with Vassalotti handling all of the writing, performing, recording, production, and art design.

From lo-fi guitar pop sounds (a la Flying Nun staples like The Clean and The Verlaines), to elements harsh industrial noise and musique concrete, Vassalotti weaves together a wide array of musical influences with a steady hand. Similarly, the album’s lyrics draw from literary references as far- reaching as Portuguese history, Russian folklore, and Spanish poetry.

Ambitious as it may be to cover so much ground, there is a rational flow and unity that ties the record together. In the chaotic globalism of the 21st century Broken Rope may not be the compass that helps us find our orientation, but it can still serve as a mirror to help shape our concept of where we fit into the fray. This is an adventurous album for uncertain times.

In the summer of 2015, a young producer named Oxblood reached out to Korallreven. He wanted them to know how much their music inspired his own creations. Over time a friendship unfolded and Oxblood began sharing early-stage material with Korallreven. Introspective and celestial, it was clear to see where the musical overlap took place. Korallreven’s contemplative arrangements were present in Oxblood’s music, but they appeared as mere brushstrokes - faint stars streaking the night sky. Oxblood’s material is distinct in its own right, pulling more from progressive house than pop music.

Intrigued with the concept of time, Oxblood often plays with transitions - the way people change over days, months and years. Unique experiences that happen only once and how these moments unlock precious bouts of spontaneity and sincerity. Months later, following many emails and a hang in Brooklyn last fall, track “Teenage Crush IV” was born as an official collaboration between artists.

While “Teenage Crush IV” was taking shape, so were big changes for both Oxblood and Korallreven: Oxblood graduated college and released a stunning two track single. Titled “How Long Is Forever,” and bundled an equally transportive b-side, the single encapsulates Oxblood’s pensive approach to making music. It was released on Gold River Entertainment, the label owned and operated by his manager Matt Bernucca. And in the fall of 2015, after releasing their celebrated single, “Here In Iowa,” Korallreven disbanded.
