Ask anyone in public safety and they will tell you that the most critical information, yet often the most elusive, is the location of the caller. Not only is the location accuracy grossly inadequate with most mobile devices today, often a caller is unaware of what their "dispatchable address" is. Not only do public safety dispatchers rely on the technology in the network to route the call correctly, but the inability of that technology to give them a discreet location puts the onus on the caller to be able to convey that information to the 911 call taker.

Giles Rhys Jones ist der Chief Marketing Officer des Londoner Startups what3words. Das junge Unternehmen hat die Welt in 57 Milliarden 3x3 Meter große Quadrate aufgeteilt. Jedes einzelne Quadrat wird mit seinen geographischen Koordinaten einer eindeutigen Drei-Wörter-Adresse zugeordnet. So entsteht die Option für sehr genaue Navigationssysteme – in der Stadt und auf dem Land.

Die Idee hat der Deutschen Bahn so gut gefallen, dass sie über ihren Startup-Fonds direkt mit einer Beteiligung zuschlug. Auch Daimler gefiel das Konzept und so gab der Konzern auf der diesjährigen IAA eine Partnerschaft mit what3words bekannt. Mercedes-Benz wird demnach sein Sprachnavigationssystem für 3-Wörter-Adressen präparieren und die Navigation mit what3words über die Betriebseinheit der zukünftig gebauten Autos möglich machen.

Auf eben dieser IAA in Frankfurt traf Jens Stoewhase den Marketer Giles Rhys Jones und staunte nicht schlecht, als der ihm nicht nur erklärte, wie das System funktioniert, sondern das man sich mit what3words in der Mongolei die Pizza sogar bis in die Steppe liefern lassen kann. Jones verriet auch, warum er nicht mit Elon Musk auf dem Mars arbeiten möchte. ;-)
