Member of the RISE collective and label co-founder Hyenah returns to his RISE imprint this July with a debut album: Love In Times Of Crisis. The twelve-track LP contains twelve individual collaborations, featuring a global selection of artists.

The enigmatic producer spoke on his ethos behind making music, as well as describing the global context that brought about the LP: “Hyenah spreads the message of unity and equality, filling dancefloors with love and joining communities from Durban to Tokyo, Copenhagen to Sao Paulo. Whilst things may have come to a halt in 2020, the artist behind the visor continued to work on a musical vision: and now it’s about to be released. Love In Times Of Crisis is a collaboration with friends and colleagues from all over the world.”

The Rite begins proceedings, upping the tempo gently via tribal percussion and Sweden’s Ernesto & The Basement Gospel’s inspiring vocals before forthcoming single The Balance soon arrives. A collaborative effort between Hyenah, Canary Islander Pablo Fierro and South African spoken-word artist Lazarusman, it’s a club-ready number, perfect for delighting dancefloors thanks to electrifying synths and tension-building breakdowns.

Amazi Wakho is the only solo production on the LP, gifting us an insight into Hyenah’s world through minimal bass tones and subtle kick-hat pairings. Afrika Elektra then takes its place, as we welcome the late-great NYC linchpin Lamont Booker AKA eLBee BaD who delights us with an enchanting soliloquy throughout. Gifting us his last-ever song, he paves the way for The Message (Soul Version). Another promising collaboration, this time German-born poet Bajka reminds us that “they can’t stop us now”, inspiring listeners with her innately touching voice, whilst the rhythmic feel of Moood soon lands.

Another leading New Yorker, Patricia Baloge’s singing transports us to euphoric realms, as the track builds swiftly into The Manifesto. It bridges both Afro-house and melodic worlds, retaining an inherent late-night edge throughout, before This Is Your Love (Club Mix) sees Netherlands-artist and Crosstown Rebels inductee Nanghiti sing amongst delicate pads and a pulsing underlying bassline, opening neatly into You Can’t Hide. Chugging along with a natural groove, techy synths compliment the transcendent tones of ‘African Nomad’ and RISE co-creator Floyd Lavine.

Swedish crooner Ernesto & The Basement Gospel appears once again on Devil’s Advocat, as raw drums reside next to authentic, Afro-inspired percussion. Rain Queen acts as the album’s penultimate number, taking the form of a wonderful closing saga courtesy of RISE-regular G-Washington, whilst Life's Plan soon brings things to a close with Demetrius’ vocals leaving us warm, hopeful and inspired.

Hyenah is an artist creating musical transitions between African house music and the western scene. While creating his own signature sound, he has become a strong ambassador for diversity in the music industry. With his regular RISE events at Watergate in Berlin, Hyenah was one of the first people to push the sound in Europe and promote the movement by organising RISE showcases worldwide.

Movement being the key word here. It is not a solo undertaking: Hyenah is simply a part of the RISE collective. There is a togetherness in this community, one that isn’t governed by a specific head or individual. Each artist and clubgoer plays their part in growing such a scene, forming a common desire to develop as one unified body.

Love In Times Of Crisis exemplifies this mission, further raising awareness and helping to showcase different musical cultures. It allows the listener to appreciate diversity through music, empowering producers and building bridges between continents as a result.

Music to make people dance with big smiles on their faces. With a penchant for strong groovy base and melodies with "a nice bit of tension", Arkadyan and Demayä set about work on their collaborative E.P. Esperanza: “In an early mix of the title track, we used a sample of Manu Chao’s voice, saying ‘esperanza, esperanza’, but a chance encounter in Dubai with mezzo soprano vocalist Yana Mann changed the course of the E.P. Inspired by the trumpet melody and the beat, Yana Mann came up with a vocal line and the result was a one-shot success. One enlightening taxi ride with Jean Claude Ades later and things started falling into place. The result is a miniature collection of “octopus rhythms”, with organic percussion and electronic beats jostling for attention with a plethora of live instruments and on-the-road pocket-mic field recordings.

Back in May, we Debuted a track called "Just"; you might just have heard of it. @feelmybicep are no strangers to breakout belters, but even by their standards this one has been picking up a heap of plaudits. So naturally we're more than willing to help facilitate their next step toward world domination, especially given as it arrives via their own cherished namesake imprint.

This, the title track from another forthcoming collaborative release with Hammer (an artist the Belfast boys are putting serious muscle behind) is equally tense and beguiling. It hooks you in from the word go, with a nagging piano lead, ooft-y mini breakdown and shiver-inducing sirensong calling through the mist. Close your eyes and you can imagine "Dahlia" laying waste to festival stages – oh wait, that actually did actually happen at Bicep's homecoming BR. Go figure.

Berlin based producer and live artist Ben Böhmer has risen through the Anjunadeep ranks to become a breakout star of the past 18 months, amassing almost 40 million streams, picking up BBC Radio 1 support from Annie Mac and Pete Tong, including an ‘Essential New Tune’, and being featured in Billboard’s ‘Ones To Watch’. 

In addition to running his own fledgling label Tön Töpferei, Ben has put out singles on Anjunadeep and acclaimed remixes for Monolink and Jan Blomqvist, both of whom now feature on Ben’s debut LP.

Ben’s early releases on tastemaker labels Bade and Keller drew comparison to revered producers Recondite and Francesco Tristano - dark tracks dotted with classical influence, featuring haunting piano lines and discordant strings. Not long afterwards, Ben lost a close family member, and both his life and his music changed course. 

Whilst overcoming this loss, Ben found solace in music. 

The moody and reflective sounds of Ben’s early work made way for brighter and more melodic music, keeping the depth and texture, but changing the tone from darkness to light. Finding a sense of hope and optimism in uplifting emotions and euphoric melodies, Ben's debut album ‘Breathing’ marks the closing of a chapter in Ben’s life, the culmination of a period of heartache and recovery, and a coming of age as an artist.  

Opening track ‘In Memoriam’ is an emotive tribute, blending powerful strings with stirring vocal samples. Title track and lead single ‘Breathing’ with collaborators Nils Hoffmann and Malou follows. A long-awaited highlight in Ben’s live shows over the past year, 'Breathing' layers Malou’s delicate voice above swung percussion and hard-hitting synths.

An avid collaborator, Ben is also joined on the album by two further breakout German stars, vocalist Monolink who features on ‘Black Hole’ and multi-instrumentalist Jan Blomqvist who lends his vocals to ‘Decade’. 

Through the album Ben explores a range of emotions, from the hopeful ‘Hunting’ with Jonah, to energetic instrumental ‘Maelstrom’ through to the hard-hitting ‘Wall Of Strings, which samples The Cinematic Orchestra. 

Following the release of the album in November, Ben will be taking his live show on an extensive world tour - dates and information to be revealed in the coming months.

‘Breathing’ is available to pre-order now, digitally, on CD and on limited edition 2x12” white vinyl, due for release 22 November 2019.
