Nick Scofield - Rebirth [Snippet]

'Northern Life Records are proud, and a little dizzy with excitement, to present Freak Seven’s debut long player ‘Ya Bosmang’.

The LP release date is October 1st 2021 and will be available through Bandcamp on digital and limited edition compact cassette with hand printed inserts.

After taking a hiatus for ten years, Freak Seven recorded and mixed this album in Manchester during 2019-2020. The album is a ten tracker running at a little over fifty minutes with its musical roots treading dark dubby waters, Manchester warehouses and Detroit Electronica

The album starts with ‘This Ain’t Hip Hop’ a mid tempo electro groove with a choppy sequenced dissonant synth bassline, TR808 drums and a string line at the end which is a head nod to New Religion and Al Nafyysh.

Ya Bosmang is the title track that starts off with a chin stroking chord progression and then steers into more visceral Beltalowda territory.

This Hurting In Me features the vocals of the wonderfully talented Victoria Unthank (no not those Unthanks but maybe a distant cousin?). A dark dragging bassline with minimal drums and a haunting vocal.

The album closes with ‘Drop It’ a tune that would fit quite easily in West London or a UR party somewhere in Detroit'

LIM42 marks the return of the hungarian dub techno artist BDTom. Since his last ep made in late 2014 called Electrosmog, BDTom delivered in recent years EPs to the Plastic City FX label. With his new EP called Inner Power, BDTom continues the dub journey across his discography. This release has 3 original tracks with the first title Inner Power comes as a classic mix of BDTom style between dub and deep house. The second track Sensitive is a more driving hypnotic track that represents his rhythmatic sound as well keeping it dub the same. With a slight of vocal along the way of the track, Sensitive is a perfect representation of dancefloor tune. The last track Mandarin Drive ends the release with a warm style and a hypnotic pad along the track build up. The entire ep is a depiction of his perfectly shaped dub techno sound which we are hearing with this ep.

'The music project Na'é emerged out of the boredom and quietness that came with the lockdowns in late 2020 and the need to bring musical ideas into reality. By weaving sound recordings from everyday life, violin, accordion, piano, vocals and of course electronic production in Ableton Live, Na’é creates smooth electronic pieces which are suitable both for dancing and studying. As a compulsive backpacker and anthropology graduate, the musical genres collected during her travels can definitely be heard in her music. Na’é’s first EP Wave Motion was released independently in March 2021. From then until July of that year she produced her 9-track album Anima which will be released under the Music.art.ppl label in 2022.'

Third Attempt is Torje Fagertun Spilde, a 20 year old artist and DJ originally from Asker, just outside of Oslo. Now established in Tromsø , Norway, he is one of the young forces in the rising new generation of electronic producers from the birthplace of the Northern Disco Groove.

Third Attempt has a distinct and uplifting flavor, firmly planted in the smoother areas of deep house. His influences range from jazz to ambient, trip hop to classic house. Third Attempt creates a fusion between pulsating electronic rhythms and his own field recordings to create atmospheric dreamscapes. Last year, he released his debut album Dreams In Common and the single "Hidden", both on his own label. Now releasing through Beatservice Records, Third Attempt is ready to branch out to the global massive.

The track "Shoreline" leads this latest single with chiming electric piano chords and spacey background sounds preceding crisp drums and a disco bass line. Beautiful pads and echoing synth arpeggiations join splashes of guitar and melodic variations to fill out this strong late night track. The b-side brings “Open Spaces,” a collaboration with fellow Tromsø producer Øystein Bolstad. Jazzy key riffs set a smokey lounge vibe as mid-tempo house rhythms, an elastic bass, and building layers of synths signal the approaching sunrise.

Roger Martinez’s Higher States concludes a successful year by welcoming Berni Turletti & Matias Chilano to the label for their debut EP. Perhaps best known for his releases on Sudbeat Music and The Soundgarden is Berni Turletti. With the backing of Hernan Cattaneo and Nick Warren, the Cordoba resident has been tipped as one of progressive music’s future stars. Similarly, Argentinean artist Matias Chilano has spent time on the genre’s premiere imprints, most notably Sudbeat Music and Replug Records, while earning praise from Guy J and Patrice Baumel. Having worked together once previously for an EP on Juicebox Music, Berni and Matias now partner up once again for their Higher States debut ‘Identity / Sarayu’.

Drawing on a variety of smooth rhythmic concepts the EP begins with ‘Identity’. On a backbone of warm, buoyant beats comes mounds of perfectly contoured bass and a lively percussive cadence. Fluid yet electric, an atmospheric glow encases the framework, as timely stabs and effervescent effects unite in a perfect sonic marriage. The narrative shifts as energetic pulses initiate the main break, with buzzing sonics gently rising alongside the main melody, as the beats drop for a spirited finale.

The companion piece ‘Sarayu’ continues the progressive minded vibes of its predecessor. Vibrant stabs and spacey effects sit atop a full, rolling groove as the journey commences. Wintry overlays elevate mood as the first act evolves, perfectly setting the stage for an elastic-like arp to push momentum into the breakdown. Furthering its emotive appeal, the centrepiece melts down into a striking melody; reflective in nature, the cascading theme provides heartfelt moments, perfectly setting up a gentle crescendo as the groove gallops towards a stirring final movement.

With ‘Identity’ and ‘Sarayu’, Berni Turletti & Matias Chilano continue to build on their creative synergy, delivering two creations that will be firmly etched in the hearts of progressive music fans, rounding out a successful year for Roger Martinez’s Higher States.
