'Casualities’ by Phonique featuring Erlend Øye, originally released on Phonique’s 2007 album 'Good Idea', is making a return with a stunning collection of remixes, both old and new. 

Out on Zatar Music, this release brings together some of the most exciting names in deep house and electronic music, breathing new life into this iconic track.

Phonique first encountered Erlend Øye’s voice in 2003 when he received a promo of a Morgan Geist track featuring the Norwegian artist. Instantly captivated, he soon discovered Øye’s extensive musical background, including his work with Kings of Convenience and his unforgettable vocals on Röyksopp’s 'Poor Leno' and 'Remind Me'.

A chance connection through their mutual friend Annie led to Phonique and Øye meeting in Berlin, sparking a musical friendship that resulted in collaborations such as the Erlend Øye DJ-Kicks mix and the much-loved 'For The Time Being'. As Øye was forming The Whitest Boy Alive, he and Phonique continued to jam together, and ‘Casualities’ was born, finding its place on 'Good Idea' in 2007. To complete the full-circle moment, Morgan Geist was invited to remix the track for the original 12” release.

Now the new release assembles the best remixes of 'Casualities' including two brand-new reworks by GRIFE & Albuquerque and Nacho Varela & Cruz Vittor. 

Brazilian producers GRIFE & Albuquerque offer a deep, hypnotic rework of ‘Casualities,’ transforming it into an entrancing house journey. Known for their atmospheric soundscapes, GRIFE and Albuquerque, a key figure in Brazil’s underground scene and a resident of Warung Beach Club, merge their styles to create a rolling groove with lush textures and crisp percussion.

Nacho Varela & Cruz Vittor, the Argentine duo renowned for their emotive deep house productions, also contribute a fresh remix, available here for the first time. Their sound is defined by deep, melodic elements and ethereal atmospheres and their take on ‘Casualities’ brings a warm, flowing energy, intertwining melancholic tones with an uplifting, cinematic approach.
Alongside the two new remixes, the release features an impressive selection of reworks:

Gorje Hewek Remix & Extended Remix: The Russian producer delivers an organic, deep house interpretation filled with lush, evolving textures.

YAME Remix: A contemporary take on the track, fusing deep grooves with a modern club-ready feel.

Morgan Geist Remix: The legendary producer, known for his work with Metro Area, adds his signature touch, staying true to the groove while injecting an unmistakable funk.

Burnski Remix: A bass-heavy, rolling remix from the UK artist, who has made waves in house and minimal circles.

Antonio Eudi & Bruno Be Remix: The Brazilian duo bring their own blend of house elements, creating a warm and infectious reinterpretation.

Also included are Phonique's Club Mix and the Original Radio Edit.

¨Performing atop the new Mayan Warrior at Sunset on Friday at Burning Man this year felt like stepping into a dream. Watching the sun melt into the horizon as I played my set of originals, edits, remixes and my electric guitar, I felt deeply connected to the moment.

Each year at Burning Man is its own special thing. Sometimes magic, sometimes mud :) This was my favorite Burn since 2012 because everything felt right. Perfect weather, amazing vibe, celebrating my birthday with incredible people, and being part of co-creating moments that will stay with me forever. Combine this with playing the grand return of the Mayan Warrior before the legendary Rufus Du Sol, and this is a week I don't think I'll ever forget.

Endless gratitude to Pablo, Rodrigo, Amal and the rest of the Mayan Warrior crew who made this all possible.¨

✔️ What are your musical influences? 

At the end of the summer of 2023, we organized a FLINTA DJ workshop as a collective - and participated ourselves. Just try it out, we thought. We liked it so much that we immediately borrowed some players and a mixer and tried it out non-stop at home. Shortly after that we played our first gig in Hildesheim. Musically we were inspired by a lot of things around us, especially downtempo. But it soon became clear that we wanted to go faster, bolder and with more vocals - and that's exactly what we did.

✔️ What makes good “afterhour”?

Fast, loud, cheeky or slow, harmonious and driving. What makes a good afterhour for us is above all the mixture of atmosphere and music - no pressure, no expectations, just people who are ready for music and let themselves drift.

✔️ Do you have any thoughts you would like to share about your set?

Our set is an invitation to let go.

Label boss D-Nox needs little introduction, his extensive back catalogue details a life in dance music soundtracking festivals, clubs and events in far-flung arenas of sound, to producing anthemic hits for seminal labels like Vapour, Balance Music and Bedrock. Fairly new to the scene, Elan Myles is making serious waves on labels such as JOOF, RPO and more. Opening their EP with ‘Love It’, we are treated to a rumbling bruiser with serious heat. Listening to the new EP of the artist with this name both answers turn out to be true. We’re confronted with a powerful stream of minimalist elegance, a complex musical organism pulsating underneath a highly psychotropic surface. The groove works like a domino chain that runs through three different realities and ends up in one state of hypnotic danceability. The Mera EP is completed by an epic dancefloor drama from the

FLDD31, a come back from our french artist (Toulouse), 'Max Tenrom'. This is a Very prolific period for him with releases on Artessa, Labo T and Art Vibes. Soon playing with Oxia at Bikini one of the famest hall of electronic music in south of france , he prepares again some great gigs with all his releases and especially Rituals ep with 5 titles. This is sophisticated electronic music, between melodies and progressive sounds confering this ep a very coherent sound wich anounce a great live over Europe for Max. Dramatics build up, melancolic violins and a straight groovy drum line will transport you in his universe.
