Matthew Shogi is a music producer, DJ, and event production specialist who has been shaping underground music spaces since getting his start in Austin in 2010. He cut his teeth running DIY live shows with local bands before shifting toward dance music around 2017, expanding into curating and producing larger-scale events. His music productions span a wide spectrum—house, funk, techno, ambient, breakbeat, drum & bass, jungle—and that versatility carries into his DJ sets, known for their unconventional yet concise style of genre blending that keeps dance floors entranced and in motion. He also helps run Total Zone, an Austin-based label focused on boundary-pushing sounds from Texas and beyond.
In recent years, he’s brought his sound and vision to venues in Tokyo, Taipei, New Orleans, and Los Angeles, while building out ambitious event series in Austin and Denver. He’s supported internationally respected artists including Objekt, CCL, Pariah, Pangaea, Scuba, Breaka, Spray, Cromby, Mark Grusane, Farsight, X-Coast, Baltra, JK Flesh, and more. As co-owner and head of production at both Ømit and Club Eternal, he’s helped establish Austin as a cornerstone for adventurous music and late-night culture. The club’s recognition as Resident Advisor’s Club of the Week marked a high point, but for Shogi, it’s just one piece of a broader vision—one rooted in forward-thinking music and the communities that give these spaces life.

In this mix, I aimed to highlight some of my recent favorites in UK funky, garage, bass, and a heavy dose of breakbeat to stitch it all together. I gravitated towards big audacious bass lines paired with washes of fluttering pads and airy melodies. Although it was recorded in my studio workshop, it really is a classic recipe designed to rinse out the full spectrum of Kingdom’s famous Bassboss sound system.
