On the back of a stunning EP for Defected’s sister label DFTD, emerging UK artist Cristoph takes it up a notch with his ‘Shelter’ EP, the double-thick 4-tracker prime and ready to smack the dancefloor right between the eyes. 
London, Bristol and Manchester may be famed for their iconic dance scenes, but the UK’s north-east continues to be a hotbed for unearthing exciting electronic music talent.  

One artist adding to the vibrant growing scene around the Tyneside, in Cristoph. Although active in his native Newcastle and beyond, with key gigs in iconic Geordie hotspots such as Digital and Loop, including a support slot alongside Waze & Odyssey that still gets spoken about till this day, it’s his slowly growing arsenal of heavy-hitting house cuts, that’s causing a torrent of support from the industry’s most respected artists. 

Just released on hyped sub-label of Defected DFTD (that recently issued cuts from Guti, among others) his ‘Guffaz’ EP has been causing a stir across dancefloor in Ibiza and beyond, with early support from Steve Lawler, who’s been smashing it at his VIVa Warrios residency at Sankeys Ibiza, along with Hot Since 82, Deetron, Catz ‘N Dogs and highly rated rising stars Dale Howard, DeMarzo and Him_Self_Her. 

His versatility as a producer also bore a remix of hip hop outfit Big Beat Bronson’s ‘New Me’ which B-Traits picked up and played on her BBC Radio 1 show, proving Cristoph’s skills extend beyond club-moving beats. 

His piece-de-la-resistance however, is his latest EP ‘Shelter’ due for release on Underground Audio, the home label of the likes of the hugely touted Finnebassen and recent BBC Radio 1 ‘Future Star’ DeMarzo. 

The four-track collection oozes class rarely seen from an artist so fresh on the scene. The title track ‘Shelter’ hits hard with thudding kicks and bass that build towards a heavy drum workout interchanged with dynamic vocal and synth drops that keep the energy flowing throughout, before steamrolling towards a pumping finish. 

‘Purvy’ is driven by lashing of low-slung bass, yearning vocals and funky claps and takes the EP in an undeniable groove-smacked ‘90s house direction with delightful, grin-inducing results.

‘Tell Me’ is the most intricate of the quartet; deep with understated tribal undertones, it shines of Cristoph’s versatility as a producer, as rolling murky sonics percolate underneath layers of bass and whispered vox, which drop into a melody-laded tech house workout more intent on building atmosphere than busting any dancefloor bollocks. 

The EP is rounded out by ‘Move on’, a cut that will have you swaying uncontrollably from foot-to-foot with its funky-as-hell bassline, persistent drums and cleverly programmed creeping synth melody that builds to a club-smashing crescendo as the track does exactly what it promises on tin. Outstanding.

Stem Records imprint kicks off 2014 with a two track single, comprising an original track from Agents Of Time, entitled ‘Lost Dreams’, and Orbis Terrarum turning a remix on the flip side.

Italian trio Agents Of Time aka Andrea Di Ceglie, Fedele Ladisa and Luigi Tutolo, are fresh names on the scene, making their debut on Stem Records. ‘Lost Dreams’ is the first single from Agents Of Time’s forthcoming L.P set to drop via Stem later in the year, seeing the outfit deliver a sound characterized by a fusion of electronica, techno and ambient soundscapes. A perfect fit for the Stem Records back catalogue, which has seen the spaced out sounds of Legowelt, the hypnotic, vocaldriven electronica of Mooryc and Ted Alexander’s gritty house style featured.

The original mix of ‘Lost Dreams’ kicks off the single, seeing the trio play on ethereal ambient soundscapes, bumpy analogue rhythms, whirring, distorted guitar tones and arp-style synth lines. Creating a ghostly, entrancing atmosphere that subtly blooms as the record progresses, while intermittent breaks introduce swirling dub echoes and vocal murmurs, to further fuel the expansive dynamism of the composition.

Then on the latter half of the single we see Orbis Terrarum rework ‘Lost Dreams’, taking things in a more upfront, hook-driven direction, bringing a weighty kick and lingering stab sequence to the forefront, while sporadic percussive hits, expansive reverberated vocals and tension building pads, generate a cold big-room vibe, which much like it’s predecessor seemingly never falters and keeps unfolding, yet in a more refined and understated way this time.

As always from Stem Records we have more classy, sophisticated electronic music here, kicking off 2014 brilliantly for what’s expected to be another great year for the imprint. Agents Of Time’s ‘Lost Dreams’ EP is out on Monday 27 January 2014.

That comes to an end later this month though, releasing the 'Artis' EP, following a whirlwind 2013 which saw him put one foot inside the mainstream with 'Jack', before serving up another catchy house number with 'Everything You Never Had (We Had It All)'.

Correspondants 28th release, Polina, delivers another brooding, evocative EP for the label, this time from the Agents of Time polyhedron: a fusion of ideas and concepts that make up a single reality. The Italian trio of Andrea Di Ceglie, Fedele Ladisa, and Luigi Tutolo came together in the summer of 2013, and their inaugural album was released via Stem Records in January of the following year. The group uses both analog and digital equipment to refine their unique amalgam of progressive, techno, and ambient music.

Late in 2013, French DJ and producer extraordinaire, Laurent Garnier, decided on a plan to get his music reaching out to the very corners of the underground music scene. Rather than self-releasing, or opting for the tried and tested labels, Garnier decided to plump for a selection of independent record labels from different countries that he greatly respected and supported, each one with their own strong identity and fan base, and to go under the moniker ‘Garnier’ for these projects. Opening his account on Chicago’s Still Music in February 2014, with the ‘AF0490’ single, the electronic stalwart has since gone on to issue singles on Modeselektor’s 50 Weapons (‘AF4302’ EP), Musique Large (‘A13’) and the MCDE label (‘KL2036’ EP).

A huge supporter of Hypercolour over the years, and perhaps an embracing of the British label’s dedication to the ‘UK sound’ (considering the Frenchman’s early deployment to Manchester’s legendary Hacienda club in the late 80s as resident DJ), it’s of little surprise then that the fifth Garnier project lands on Hypercolour this August.

Two stellar tracks then from Garnier; ‘ENCHANTé’ is an epic 122BPM chugger, its soaring and pitch bending strings, rasping keys and filtered vocals providing plenty of melancholic melody and classic electronic vibes, whilst a swinging drum pattern keeps things nice and tight. A big tune from Garnier here, sitting very snuggly with his legendary track, ‘The Man with the Red Face’, we’re expecting this one to ring out across dancefloors far and wide over the coming months….

On the flip, ‘pǝsnɟuoɔ’ goes straight for the jugular; a pumping techno workout with scattering and inter-galactic bleep-work, thunderous effects, and with a heady nod to the sounds of Detroit’s minimalists Robert Hood and Jeff Mills. Battering 909 snares are offset with the warm and harmonic choir pads, a killer slice of techno from one of the scene’s most switched on and in tune godfathers!

Ok, so we did this remix at the end of last year, whilst on tour... really with the sole intention of having it as dub to play it in our DJ sets. However, it consistently went down nicely at our shows, so we figured we should really pass it on to you guys. It's unofficial... just us having fun on that old rolling fidget/bass style.
