WhoIsPaula WIP

Gated's second compilation takes inspiration from the path less travelled, the earthen underbelly that binds disparate threads to its wonky centre.

So while the music here is from artists all over the world, each track is grounded in a quirky, off-kilter sound, from the opener by UK hardware house don @perseus-traxx to the closer by Space Agent, the alias of a yet-to-be unveiled techno artist.

In between we get Gated stalwarts @guavid, @polyseme, @acidulant, and @LloydStellar with their takes on the wonk, plus glassy-eyed electro from Austin, USA-based @collinsullivan, unusually banging fare from man of the moment @MOY, and broken techno from the criminally under-appreciated @StacieAnneChu.

There's also the reissued and remastered sub-bass squelcher Beta Carotene by @modifiedsounds, which was originally released in 1998 on UK breaks label Slalom.

This EP from German duo @not-even-noticed is a music production lover’s dream. Honestly, the sound design and production levels are just beyond belief in my opinion. Needless to say, they have been on heavy rotation since I first received the demos and they aren’t anywhere close to getting old yet.

They somehow straddle the line between beautiful soundscapes and absolute face melting, eyes rolling back, grabbing the person next to yours’s shoulders heat. Does that even make sense? Well I think you get what I mean.

The EP is out next Friday the 21st.

Big one from our reptilian overlord. On a landmark 50th release for the label, Reptant returns to Kalahari Oyster Cult with a one-two punch of cybernetic machine funk.

The followup to 2019’s ‘Phasic Reflex’ EP, ‘Duality of the Gecko’ picks up where its predecessor left off: 2 tracks demonstrating an innate ability to achieve Detroit-styled deepness without sacrificing dancefloor propulsion.

Curdled sci-fi melodies and neck-snapping rhythm take centre stage across both tracks. Nocturnal, mainframe-tapping biz from one of contemporary electro’s foremost proponents.

Since emerging from the underground scenes of Frankfurt and Halle/Leipzig in 2020, not even noticed have caught the attention of many through their signature blend of old-school elements with captivating sampling and a unique approach to sonic structures. Releases on household names such as Craigie Knowes, Holding Hands, Faux Poly and Chat Noir Distributions, have showcased the prolific duo’s sonic breadth, varying from progressive house and intricate trance to clinical electro and atmospheric warehouse rave anthems, all connected through a foundation of acid and breakbeats. 

not even noticed’s “nocturnal slide” EP, sees the duo explore a more emotional and ambient-leaning sound which remains deeply rooted in the rave. Lead single “Ethur” perfectly encapsulates the EP’s sonic world through its combination of expertly chopped breaks, delicate synth arpeggios and ethereal vocals with an ominous bassline.

‘Beneath the Surface’ sees not even noticed return to Craigie Knowes following their impressive debut in 2023. As they landed from an extended hover - Fast At Work found themselves drawn to a new, singular sonic flow. With a future forward vision of higher-deeper tempos, the crew realized that often the most meaningful iterations can be found in the most inconspicuous places - “not even noticed,” some might say. Within these subtle crevices, a rising duo emerged to carry this torch forward, expertly crafting four original offerings. While the title contribution echoes a sermon of oozing bassline flows and siren signals, “Drip Advise” mesmerizes with its spiraling melodies and a deluge of percussion. The B-side hosts the acid-tinged “Creamavity,” as well as “Anxious,” which synthesizes the full pilgrimage into a polished musical definition. To wrap their heli-disc, the mystical duo prescribes a set of two reshapes: Wisdom Teeth’s K-Lone opts for strong foundational grooves and deep airy textures, while Maara crafts an oceanic odyssey – over 10 minutes of timeworn atmospherics and sensorial sensibilities.
