Hiii I’m Kia, (people often ask me what my real name is so I thought I’d specify that). Pronouns are she/her. 

Fun fact - my name is a car dealership (Kia Sydney), and people often think that’s a joke too. My Croatian grandfather changed his last name to Sydney when he moved there in the 50s as a means of getting a job in what was a very (and still for the most part is) racist society. 

Biggest musical influence from childhood?

Well when I was going up I played the piano, clarinet and percussion (played the glockenspiel in the school band lol) so that definitely led me to be musically minded from a young age. When I was 13/14 I remember getting into electronic music via big idm producers like aphex twin, four tet and aleksi perala. Because I was into really melodic stuff I think it was the first time I’d heard it done in an electronic way and I remember finding that really exciting. 

Favorite DJ mixing trick? 

Cobblestone jazz - India in me. It’s not particularly easy to mix per say, but it’s an insane 14 minute roller that completely shifts vibe in the middle, so I always play it if I feel like I need a breather or an energy shift in a set.

Early 2000s. So much good tech house.

What would you like to see in the future for the dance community?

More community run clubs and more people who listen and participate in the scene understanding the importance of community in dance music generally.

For our opening mix, we’re delighted to share a recent Steam Room session with the Bangkok-based selector and producer Sunju Hargun. 

For two hours, he delivered a masterclass of immersive, deep and psychedelic techno. And true to style, the set is a seamless flow of intricate rhythms and subtly shifting textures, shadowy grooves and pulsating basslines.

Transmission 001: Sunju Hargun

One year on, I am so excited to share the recording of my set at Mo:Dem 2024, playing at The Seed stage 🌀💠🌀

My first experience of The Seed blew me away, opening new doorways in my mind and rewiring neural connections between genres and sonic sensations. Each stage at Modem @mo_dem is a universe of its own, and I felt completely at home at The Seed ~ a place for lucid dreaming and floating through the depths of space ✥

I played on Friday night from 11PM-2AM, slithering through subaquatic dubstep, spectral IDM, molten halftime and slinky psychedelic nighttime music of all shades ~

The set starts off propulsive, and as we descend into the night, the energy slowly evaporates, as The Seed shifts into a cocoon of pulsating luminescence for the late night hours. 

Thank you to @marcomental and @spekkiwebu for the invitation and inspiration. Returning to The Seed this year was equally special, it is now deeply nestled in my heart, and the recording of 2025’s set might also surface one day. But for now, I hope you enjoy this dive back to 2024 ~ three hours of psychedelic bass vibrations from the depths ✧｡⋆.

About the mix: "This mix is heavily inspired by my recent experiences at Pe:rsona and Ozora festivals, which I attended back-to back straight from one to the other. I found a resurgence in deeper and slowly evolving sets which felt so fresh I wanted to channel that energy into this mix. Best enjoyed outdoors or afters!"

Soulful, breezy and groove-laden, softi's Patterns of Perception 122 shimmers with her kaleidoscopic, minimal sound. Weightless sparks float and flicker in dim light. Time dilates; seasons drift.

Hey Jasmin, how’s it going? What's been happening for you lately?
I’m well, I’m currently living between Lisbon and London this summer which has been a dream! Great food, beach sessions and writing music. It’s been a wild 3 months and I’m just getting myself ready for the seasons changing!

What can you tell us about your mix?
For this mix I wanted to mould my love of groovy minimal and psychedelic tones for the moody season ahead, which is usually my signature sound! I have been producing a lot of this recently and some of my unreleased bits are exclusively inside 💜

⁠Is there a track or tracks that are extra special for you?
I’d probably say my own productions are the special to me as it reminds me of how much I have developed as a producer and artist. I love connecting with the tracks and being able to create my own atmospheric world for listeners to get lost in. But one track that I always come back to is "bluep" by Underground City Loop (a producer from Aus). I have been playing this track for years and it has every sonic element you'd want from a track - low end sub groove with dark melodic synths.
