This is one of those stories that starts with a boy finding a book in a dusty attic. 'Weird Legend' drags you across contrasting seascapes, offering different lighting from song to song. Abundant in field recordings from this former sailor officer's favorite beaches of Crimea, this material has sounds of the sea and ocean as a main inspiration. Both gentle and moist in its melodies and as harsh as techno can get in its beats, D. Yaroslav’s debut takes a strong stance and doesn’t fall out of character. Once again, we are helping the ones in need. Dug Up The Bongo founder reached out to us with this entrancing material to help Kyiv’s humanitarian fund “Grains of Peace”, started by “20ft radio”.

Once again on the Roska Kicks & Snares imprint, we are back in business to unveil a very exciting new EP drop from a returning face we are thrilled to see. Following on from the previous launch of his ‘A49 / Rudey’ EP, we are truly excited to welcome back the sounds of SPD, who has been on an absolutely killer run, spreading a fusion of UK funky and bass music around the land alongside a number of different label projects such as Eatmybeat & Durkle Disco, with some seriously high levels of impact.   

This new project is made up of three absolute scorchers, again treading the thin line between UK bass and funky, combining different electronic elements and rhythmic themes to generate something completely new. We open up with the title track ‘Caught Napping’, an almost techno inspired sweep through vibrant syncopated drum lines and eerie woodwind overlays, all of course wrapped up in a sumptuous piece of bassline production.

Next, a track that leans slightly more towards the UK funky end of the spectrum as the busy drum work and more minimal backdrops of ‘Drum Squad’ are unleashed, causing a highly energetic output to occur, linking together nicely with scattergun sub punches, unpredictable LFO thuds and unorthodox woodwind toots. Finally, a much more UKG-centric sound as ‘Hepcat’ delivers broken-beat drum rhythms, lofi synthetic processing and super catchy vocal designs, all culminating in a euphoria-inducing breakdown that will have lighters in the air across many a dance this winter.

The whole feel of this project is extremely refreshing, with a clear and concise set of different influences all playing their part in pushing SPD’s sound forward into previously unexplored realms of underground dance music.

Captain Mustache feat. The Advent - Computer Monkey (Legowelt Remix) [LYO#008]

The legendary Robotnick (a nickname Maurizio Dami assumed in the 80s) is a towering name in Florentine music and someone who very much defined the early disco scene thanks to a superb run of enduring club cuts, not least his seminal 'Problèmes D'amour'. Although he is now in his 70s, he is still kicking out essential jams. His music features plenty of the arpeggios that have always given his music its character, coming on labels like Permanent Vacation, Clone, Bordello a Parigi and Bosconi Records. Few artists understand analogue machines and dance floor mechanics like this man, as he proves once more with this, his eighth studio album.

The concept of ‘Simple Music’ is to craft tunes for any setting. It is about combining traditional music parts, chords, melodies and songs to make music that is varied and vibrant and constantly evolving. Says Alexander, "Riffs and grooves are not endless, and when you are my age, you may have heard them already. I am having more and more trouble finding interesting tracks for myself, so I felt the need to produce “simple” music that generates genuine feelings in a music scene that can be averse to risk."

Seductive disco-house opener 'Babel' is about the difficulties of understanding each other, even if we speak the same language and culture. The vocoder vocals take centre stage next to lush chords, then 'It Is So Easy' has a smug character in the vocal refrain and a sneering attitude in the verses that is playful and characterful next to the rugged and punchy drum grooves. The brilliant 'Why' is built on elastic electro-disco and muses on a lover’s inconsistency, while the space disco of 'Underpass' is a dark vision of a late-night walk that channels the original Robotnick sound of the early 80s.

The heartbroken robot lullaby 'Virtual Empathy' is about "the empathic feelings induced by mainstream TV to manipulate mass consensus", whilst 'I Want To Know' finds Robotnick describing his dreams and wondering about their meaning over funky bass twangs and serene disco sounds. Then comes the only instrumental 'Intro-Robo' with its multi-layered arpeggios and the magnificent title track, which captures the whole essence of the album with taught retro bass, icy hi-hats and stiff rhythms that will jerk any floor into action.

Simple Music is a masterclass once more from the studio wizard that is Alexander Robotnick.

While keeping busy during the summer with various festival shows and remix duties, UrbnMowgli is on a tight release schedule this winter. Heavy & fast electro/breakbeat hitters are flying left and right for labels like Warning, Planetaria Soundsystem and his own Emotional Voyage imprint.

For his ‘Transcultural’ EP though he is revisiting the housier, bouncier sounds that used to dominate his earlier productions. It only makes sense that it is coming out on SEV Berlin, a label that emersed from a collective that UrbnMowgli has been part of since his early days in Berlin.

Midnight Rush builds up slowly with deep chords, as high hats skitter over dreamy synths and a bouncing subbass pattern.
Strangers Comfort drives the energy forward with a throwback 80s sound palette supporting the EPs central synth lead themes.

Dancefloor cut ‘Better Me’ shows UrbnMowgli on his ravier side, adding choppy chords, 4 on the floor kicks and an isolated vocal sample to the mix.

The EP goes out with a bang, as Tooflez Label head Danielle Arielli delivers a thumping remix of ‘Better Me’ which features a driving bassline, housy percussions and frenetic disco strings.

I have been a huge fan of Pye Corner Audio ever since I heard the album ‘Sleep Games’ in 2012. I was instantly hooked by the sound Martin Jenkins created, and have followed his incredible career ever since. For me his sound is a beautiful mixture of the nostalgic and dystopian, pushing sonic boundaries with every release. The world of Pye Corner Audio is a warm yet brooding place to completely lose yourself in. It has always been a dream of mine to work with Pye Corner Audio so it was incredible to get that opportunity!

The remix of Lack Of Sleep is fantastic, and I couldn’t be happier with the results! Majestically, unashamedly huge in every way, it really is a monster of a remix. The build throughout is magnificent, and takes the original further towards the dance floor - while still maintaining Pye Corner Audio’s signature, inimitable style. Complete with Acid squelches, euphoric pulsing synths and the constant pushing rhythmic momentum, the remix is a work of beauty and a perfect rush of endorphins. Turn it up!

Gli Ornamenti comes in three different versions, which is nice. The U20 Mix is all about that sweet Roland U20 and offers us many of its decorative sounds. 
The Maximal Minimal Mix is the one to go to when you don’t want a lot of different stuff, but what you want you really want a lot of. 
The Ambient Mix is perfect to play while inspecting the grass growing under your apple tree. This is a good 12-inch single for the industrial balearic summers ahead.
