Since the Covid-19 lockdown began the music and events industry has been thrown into unchartered waters, leaving artists and online media in a financially vulnerable position, and with much more time on their hands.

To help some of those artists, and provide Ransom Note with much-needed financial support, in April we reached out to some friends of the website with the challenge to make a track in collaboration with another producer, musician or vocalist, remotely. The result was ‘Pen Pals’, a compilation featuring 15 collaborations. 

Following the reception of the first release, we decided to embark on volume two, enlisting a fresh group of artists and musicians to take up the challenge. 40 artists stepped up to the plate and 19 tracks were produced culminating in a compilation spanning a vast musical breadth.

Due to the current situation we’ve increased royalties for all artists involved and, whilst the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions apply, accounting will be processed fortnightly. Profits from the compilation will also provide financial support for Ransom Note who have been heavily impacted by the halt of the events industry. 

On Juneteenth (19/06/2020) we will donate all profits from sales to Black Minds Matter - a UK charity making mental health topics relevant and accessible for all black people. On this date Bandcamp will be matching all sales with a donation to NAACP Legal Defense Fund.

A lot has happened since then, for both the label and the artist. Each growing, developing and coming into bloom . However there still remains the initial connection that brought them together in the early stages of both of their ’sonic-journeys’. That connection - a desire to explore the unknown shoulder to shoulder - continues in this next chapter. 

The catalogue number LTP0700 suggests that these songs sit somewhere on the dance floor, most likely at the epicentre of a gathering, aired out at 7am - when the consciousness sets adrift from the body and life ‘under the sea’ suddenly seems all too plausible. 

The ‘Abyss Mix’ revisits one of the more tough-edged tracks from the Dreems catalogue, reimagined with the application of archetypal soundtrack sounds. Don’t be swayed by the choice of theme here - it’s intention is to make you feel mystery and threat in equal measures. 

Die Orangen appear from the depths, steering the 9 minute groove into the eye of the storm. With a few twists and turns they manage to slide in tropes that at the same time feel disparate and cohesive. Shoe-Gaze-Funk-e-Industralia ? Caution - don’t paddle out to this one at dusk or dawn.

The synced rhythm of modulated drum grooves washing up against diaphanous chords in ‘Dolphin Communion’ play the perfect underwater backdrop for the poetry and words of John Sea Lilly, the highly regarded marine scientist and botanist, turned electronic music councillor. 

At last and at least not the last from this man - Inigo Vontier - a remix that weaves mucho fun and enough funky funky weirdness to satisfy any weird funky funky enthusiast to the core. His ‘Mushroom Mix’ gives the package a deft organic touch - surf ’n' turf they call it in Australia.
