From the bookshelves to the curtains and the once varnished table top, inches of dust covered the surfaces. Hoards of newspapers and old magazines stacked to ceiling height and baskets of trinkets and old gadgets cluttered the floor. The past had always fascinated him more than the present, it conjured up feelings of nostalgia that he preferred to linger in. Though the world continued to move forwards he was happy to stay exactly where he was.

For the best part of a decade, through their events and record label Madrid's Play Pal Music have been exploring the darker spaces of electronic music touching on disco, new wave, psychedelic and slo mo. Sandwiched between their lengthy discography of artist EPs, they've been sharing their Pals VA compilations which have called on artists from all over the world who choose to lurk in the shadowy corners. For their sixth instalment they've brought together the likes of Arvin Fajar, Leo af Ekenstam and Vongold, among others, for seven tracks that travel between the cosmic, the deep and the heady fringes of dance music.

PREMIERE: Vongold - DAC [Play Pal Music]

We would like to start today’s premiere congratulating our friends of the solid Mexican label Bonkers for their anniversary. Great job, lads! As usual, the occasion will be celebrated with some mezcal shots and a compilation: “Year IV” brings together a rich tapestry of sonorities provided with love by acclaimed and rising names of the so-called Indie Dance/Dark Disco scene: Sobek, Colossio (SXDNS025) Feat. Animales Nocturnos, Ludviq & Radial Gaze, Moisees & ZEA, ID_UA (SXDNS229), and Oblako Maranta spared no efforts to deliver powerful and well-constructed cuts, successfully raising the bar of the jubilant release.

Premiered here, ID_UA’s contribution is a must-have! Kyiv-based Igor Dyeyev, even facing the atrocities of a war in his country, allows himself to escape to a safe haven that is his creative mind when producing in order to keep fighting the good fight: Bringing to life his own interpretation of high-quality dance-floor-oriented music. And he fails to disappoint! In “Crucial Moment”, the throbbing bassline, arpeggiated synth layers, ominous lead, and acid gait he came up with set the mood of one of the highlights of the VA.

It’s been a few weeks since the release of RSS Disco’s “Mooncake”. An album that weaves the fibers of wave, disco & cosmic music into a dense, glowing pattern of sound.

Alongside the album, we’ve heard a bouquet of hand-picked remixes by Prins Thomas, Johanna Knutsson, Johannes Klingebiel and more.
As the year closes, RSS Disco prepare for the final slice of cake. This one’s extra tasty again!

Irusu (12" Club Mix) takes the spacey/wavey original song and propels it into dimension 12. A place where lifeforms of all configurations compete in a strobe-heavy dance off.

Sharing the dessert-spoon is label companion and friend Rigopolar (Duro, Nein, Oráculo Records). Known for his driving and mind-bending productions, his remix offers a hypnotic experience, made for the big (or even huge?) dancefloors with pulsing drums and teasing synthlines.

Unreel's next salvo, "Your Voice Your Choice" EP, comes courtesy of on-the-rise German producer Johannes Klingebiel. Championing a sound both ethereally deep and physics-defying, Johannes' newest oozes a fine mix of exotica-laced funk and entrancingly dynamic potency, smooth-tongued yet loaded for bear. The vapour-wafting opener "There Will Be Stuff" tackles the journey on a distinctly heightened note, fusing prog-indebted club kinetics with an heavily processed palette of effusive synth disco and lushly hued, post-trancey shades, all bound at having you zoning out in a jiffy. A weightlessly nimble number to the core, the title-track "Your Voice Your Choice" puts on a faux-organic parade of wonky programming and morphed-out vocals teleporting us to a vibrant magnetic field of sorts, where abstract shapes and playful rhythms gang up in perfect symbiosis. Gear up for a moment of utter raving epiphany on the dance floor no matter the hour of the day, as Klingebiel's silken touch reveals all its finesse and complexity. Topping off the masterclass, the explosive "More More More" lays it down in further muscular fashion, treating us to an irresistible tidal wave of steel-clad aggression at first (think the darker sibling to Paul Woolford's anthem, "Erotic Discourse"), slowly hatching into a poetic climax of hazy, sylphic house and 303-engineered squelch laced into one as bars unfold.
