During summer of 2023 we got the idea to unite norwegian and georgian producers to a compilation for the further enhancing of our nations bond. Rather than just asking for tracks, we sent out an invitation commisioning everyone involved to make a smooth track. As per usual on LEK, there were no limitations in terms of genre, but the track had to be somewhat relevant to the floor.

The total variety of different expressions far exceeded our expectations, and we are proud to present this compilation ranging all the way from deep dubby downtempo, party house, electro in many forms, and multi-crossovers.

Neither Timothy J. Fairplay, nor Norwell are strangers to the Dalmata Daniel family: both of them are trustworthy contributors to DD compilation albums of earlier years, plus Norwell has released his 'ODD' EP and ‘Joint Spaceflights’ EP back in 2017 and 2019 on the label. So this time, it’s a return for Norwell, and a debut for Mr. Fairplay: their DDS09 split EP is here to present 4 tracks full of outer space lights, eerie vibes, mesmerizing beats and cosmic energies.

Timothy J. Fairplay’s side A starts with the explicit kicks and ominous basslines of ‘Caliber 9’. Slowly and steadily, the laser blasts and relentless drums all add up to define a world of space cadets on the run, where any odd-looking figure can turn out to be a malignant, speedy alien. ‘TV Tower’ takes us to another planet with an even higher rotation velocity. Fast percussion elements and squished lower frequencies take center stage in this intergalactic episode, but the whistle-like melodies and descending, bubbling robot signals make the journey complete.

Flip to side B, and enter the contemplating, otherworldly atmospheres of Norwell. ‘Midnight Rituals’ gives you the chills with its breath-like swooshes, grievous sirens and deadly asteroid belts. Yet, there is no need to worry: after an intense ride with your spaceship, eventually you end up in the same spot, where you started: in the stable and steady mid-tempo beats of an expertly-programmed drummachine. The orbital mission comes to an end with ‘Natives’, a dense and heroic hymn with emotive structures and well-crafted harmonics. The track starts with the bittersweet, lamenting synths of a solo voice, pouring their heart out in the spotlight, all alone on the stage. All of a sudden, a hard-hitting, rhythmic groove commences its last rush of dedicated cadences. It is full of breaks, it is full of 303s, completed with airy echoes and dreamy, light gestures. ‘Natives’ keeps on building its structure with elegant paces, providing a massive, yet delicate experience of Norwell’s defined aesthetics. The track lets the last strokes of its gloomy synths roll out, along with the final round of looping drums, thus putting an end to DDS09.

The machine was oppressive and loud, it watched from the skies above, like a great overseer from the beyond. The people down below knew not why or who was behind the bulking beast but they could remember the sunshine and the life that had existed before. That, they would never forget.

It was always there, watching their every move as they came and went. It was a deconstruction tool, designed to break apart the pieces of a society which was once rife with colour and care. Now it was all gone.

Valencia based record label Frigio are set to release a remix package which features alternate versions of tracks from CLOCK DVA. This one is a hard hitting electro focussed EP which is built for dark, sleazy rooms. The Atom ™ remix was the stand out cut for us with a riotous saw driven synth and dark moody, alluring vocals.

Since bursting onto the scene three years ago Maroki has shaped out an emotionally-charged sound that comfortably wraps around any number of club styles. Even by his swooning, introspective standards, his new release on Ano Ano takes this idea further with guest vocalist Maeve rounding out some of his most poignant productions to date. 

2021 was a tricky time to gain a foothold in club music, but Maroki’s music transcended the limitations of dance music without dancefloors thanks to his melodic strong suit, drawn from a background in classical piano and soundtrack composition. A run of acclaimed releases on labels like E-Beamz, Lost Palms and Flippen Bits cemented his arrival as he elegantly moved between light-footed breakbeat, dexterous 2-step and artfully swung house.

Through The Tooth follows a logical path from his previous appearance on Ano Ano - the 2023 EP Plastic Brain, thanks to Maroki’s innate instinct for the low-end sound craft of UK sound system music and the harmonic sensibility he applies to every aspect of his sound. If these six new tracks feel more inwardly focused than, say, his drop on Lobster Theremin, it’s because they were made through the surreal isolation of lockdown.

The presence of rising icon Maeve [3] on ‘Still Burning’ and ‘Bad Day In Bonus Town’ celebrates the sense of liberation that came as outside life resumed — the pair connected in the wake of Glastonbury Festival to create the final pieces of the puzzle that make up this

EP. ‘Dreamer’ features additional production from Hypnøs, a close friend whose studio sits across the canal from Maroki’s in Amsterdam, and you can expect to hear more from their partnership in the coming months.

A special mention goes to the artwork for Through The Tooth, which comes from James Lacey at Pointless Illustration. A longtime friend of Maroki’s, Lacey renders the sound of the EP in dusky tones and geometric formations that call back to the bold vision of the Italian futurists — a fitting mood for the balance of retro and modernist touches contained in the music.

Exploring a more universal approach that reaches beyond the pure functionality of music for the club, Maroki taps into the idea we don’t just need beats for late nights in dark rooms. These are songs to carry with you through life, with an emotional resonance which lingers long after the final delay trails have run their course on EP closer ‘Offworld Paddy’.

London and Stockholm collide in an explosion of mysterious psychedelia. Megababes welcomes Kajsa Villius to the trance sphere, collaborating across 890 Miles with label boss Kitsta.

Kajsa Villius and Kitsta’s ‘KK1’ opens the EP on with a hard-hitting psy kick and a pulsing bass down low. Cut-up, synth-like vocal samples wriggle above among its stripped-back percussion before ‘KK2’
brings in mysterious melodies, wonky vocals and hypnotic bass, culminating in a whirlpool of psychedelic acid elements.

Kitsta’s solo track ‘Karma Baby’ follows up their collective offerings with racy low-end and earworm melodies before breaking down slow-mo style for the finish. Closing out the EP, Villius delivers ‘K Effect’, a
true ode to modern psytrance-infused house music with tripped-out high-end and layers of driving rhythm and bass.

The ‘890 Miles’ EP by Kitsta and Kajsa Villius follows up the ‘Get Ready’ two-tracker released by Balamii and Voices Radio resident Kitsta last year. This next entry on the newly formed label welcomes Stockholm artist Kajsa, a DJ and producer on the radar of renowned international DJs like D. Tiffany and Zeynep, with her and Kitsta’s ‘890 Miles’ EP already winning the support of Aiden Francis, Tãn and Remotif.
