Kerrie made her impressive Cultivated Electronics Ltd debut in July with ‘We Continue Part 1’ which has grabbed the attention of media and DJs alike, recently featuring in DJ Mag’s Staff Picks amongst other accolades. She now returns in September for Part 2.

This Irish born, Manchester based DJ and producer has been rising in the ranks since first joining the Eastern Bloc crew and over time has taken her analogue live shows to the likes of Freerotation and The Warehouse Project. 2021 has also seen the launch of her label, Dark Machine Funk Recordings (DMF).

Like her own label name suggests on ‘We Continue Part 2’, Kerrie delivers four more raw electro tracks bringing dark, twisted bass driven machine funk to Cultivated Electronics’ vinyl-only offshoot, Cultivated Electronics Ltd.

“V.O.I.D.” EP by Sha Ru showcases fresh artistic angles since their previous releases. The three club-focused tracks cover personal experiences of overcoming fear while the band is exploring singing in english. The lead track “V.O.I.D.” tells the story of the flight that the band took earlier in the year where they started to face severe turbulence and noticed bright flashes outside the window. it seemed to be the originating point of a storm. The sounds in the track reflect the intensity of this fear through the distorted bassline and the dynamic break of the dnb section of the song.

“Hover” describes a different kind of fear. that type of fear that only your mind processes. The lyrics cover the situation in which two people have different points of views on something they strongly believe in. They both try to prove their point to each other, but they’re both stubborn and the atmosphere feels “Numb”. Nevertheless, the two also want to solve the conflict, and they start to communicate transparently. The sonic atmosphere of the track is the least aggressive on the EP since the climate of this kind of fear is the most complex as it involves multiple people who are afraid of the conflict outcome. The last track on the release “Moi” takes a different approach to narrate the generic sense of fear. The sonic palette translates a consistent increase in the energy, just like the fear that slowly intensifies in your mind and body that then suddenly controls you fully. This is represented by the growing synth in the middle of the track and the percussions that keep up the tension across the chronicle of the song.

A heady fusion of rock’s steely drive, cosmic trance, wiggy acid basslines and cavernous dub, Talk is at once rooted in the turn of the millennium while sounding utterly outside of space and time. A combination of coveted un- and self-released material, the record features a remix, specially commissioned by Betonska, from Naone.

Jin Won Lee (이진원), otherwise known as Gazaebal, is a Korean producer and DJ whose sensual, spacious approach to electronica is rooted in his background as a sound engineer. Having begun his career in New York, in recording studios working with the likes of the Wu-Tang Clan and Janet Jackson, his expansive creative repertoire further includes media art and chart-topping K-pop. A member of Tacit Group, a collective creating algorithmic and audiovisual performances, Gazaebal is presently best known for ambient-adjacent soundscapes, yet in the halcyon late 1990s and early 2000s, he synergised a uniquely potent take on club music.

The titular track was initially released in 1999 on the independent imprint dmstrax, established by Gazaebal’s agent and wife, Nine. First appearing on techno@kr, a compilation CD dedicated to Korean electronic musicians, ‘Talk’ is an hybrid, electro-punk anthem. Colliding sung-screeched Korean lyrics with heavy breakbeat, its abrasive textures are delivered with ultra-slick orchestration. Halfway through, the jittery breaks collapse, reprised by momentous four-to-the-floor. It’s this dichotomy between poise and power that characterises the record as Gazaebal flexes his ear for intricate melodies and rocketing build.

Composed alongside Big Hit Productions founder and BTS songwriter Mr. "Hitman" Bang, the original version of 'And So On' was not available for re-release due to licensing difficulties. But thankfully the multitrack was well preserved. Utilising these components, Nawon Ha (AKA Korean-but-Netherlands-based artist Naone) re-imagines the song for Betonska. Remixed with her own hypnotic vocals, she inflects the track with mesmerising, multi-layered dimensions; a fractal, downtempo trance number that connects two generations of underground electronic musicians from South Korea.

From the pulverising kickdrum of ‘Gilda’ to ‘Spiral's acidic dub fuzz, Talk moves between sharp crests, twists, and turns, enveloping driving 4/4 and shuffling half-time. Presented as a mix-friendly mini-album, the carefully selected 6 tracks are ideally tailored to DJ-level quality and loudness. As much suited to the psychedelic rave scene of yesteryear as they are to contemporary dancefloors, Gazaebal’s productions are defined by his idiosyncrasies. Melding the sheen of tight-production with a flagrant DIY spirit, his music assuages the high-commercialism of the 2000s, resulting in a sound that’s as definitely punchy as it is intoxicatingly precise.

Brooklyn-based producer R A L L Y (fka R Cole) is back with his second EP of the year.
Spark in the Woods continues his exploration of faster tempo dance floor compositions– with influences from dub, grime, breaks, electro and techno. Paying homage to raving in the forest, the four tracks are inspired by his experiences navigating our relationship to nature and energy. 
 
In addition to the four new tracks from R A L L Y, Spark in the Woods includes remixes from Young Muscle (Detroit), Adam 2 (Vancouver), and D.Vices (Portland).

R A L L Y kicks off Spark in the Woods with “Amaranth,” (140bpm) an energetic and dynamic track blending lively bass music vibes, dub influences, and sharp synth elements. Built around a driving groove, “Amaranth” uses vocal samples and rhythmic energy to create a vibrant, fast-moving composition that is bound to light up dance floors. The track features distinctive nods to dub, grime, and electro while maintaining a forward momentum that keeps listeners engaged.  The Young Muscle remix of the track takes a tribal spin on the original, while D.Vices’ electro version is a firm handshake between Detroit and UK bass. 

Weaving between garage, dub, & breaks, Broken Spectre’s gritty bass has a mystical edge. The 150bpm track is defined by its hypnotic energy, which is carried through Adam 2’s downtempo 90’s style trip hop remix.  

The Grove is an elevated psy-stepper that brings awakening energy to the dance floor. Vibes abound with a trippy acid baseline, distant chants, and hazy echoes that filter through the trees.

Title track Spark in the Woods punchy 808 takes you on a journey through the woods. The electro-breakbeat rhythm twists before taking a sharp left turn into a halftime cadence. Detuned trance gates, FM harmonics and grime flutes round out the EP with a reminder of R A L L Y’s dubstep roots. 

Spark in the Woods is out September 27 on all platforms.
