The shop was small and crowded, outside in the street it was scorching, the block was on fire in the midst of the summer and everyone and everything was looking for relief. He would be their answer…

He wasn’t sure how it had come to be this way, that he was the one to serve. Yet here he was…

From time to time he’d have to check himself, check anything, check something. Then the chime would ring out again…

The made ace, insanely brilliant Brian d’Souza aka Auntie Flo, releases ‘Aker The Lion God’ on 31st October, a precursor to his upcoming album ‘In My Dreams (I’m A Bird and I’m Free)’, out on 21 November.  PRE-SAVE ALBUM ~

Inspired by field recordings from New Zealand and Brazil, the environmental sounds of a conch shell and a bassline influenced by Charanjit Singh’s proto-acid house work is worked into some altogether more ethereal.

‘Metacosm’ is an intoxicating fusion of analogue and modular ambience from the master of the genre sounds like one of the most rewarding experiences your senses will enjoy as summer draws to its enviable conclusion. Much like the music transformation and the power of change remain the main ingredients as one season dissolves into the next, notes play like a never-ending series of fully textured conversations between sounds and their consequences, forming as an escape route to elsewhere or through being in tune as part of an ongoing meditative process. The stories expressed here are likewise purely heartfelt and refined with the history of lived-in experiences.
Steve Miller produces music of such a high calibre that this selection compiled from key releases across 2024 readily testifies to the artist's innate understanding of the sound of music and its fully charged potential to effect constructive change. Bathed in relaxed temptation each of the seven numbers occurs brilliantly in its own right from the intensely rich landscapes highlighting the exotic title track ‘Metacosm’, to the Caribbean flavours of ‘Summer of Dub’. From the dreamy bliss of ‘I Saw You Dancing on Mars’ to the ecstasy-filled joy of ‘Baja’. Suite For Chick is a heartfelt homage to the late jazz maestro Chick Corea. This collection features reinterpretations of City Gate, Rumble, Time Track, and Hymn of the Heart from the Chick Corea Elektric Band, as well as Return to Forever’s classic Romantic Warrior. These vibrant renditions celebrate Corea's enduring legacy in the jazz world. Chick Coreaplayed a crucial role in shaping Miles Davis's electric fusion era and was a key member of Lost Quintet. He was also a founding force behind Return to Forever and many other influential groups.
 
Here Bangkok-based Maarten Goetheer collaborates with top Thai drummer Pong Nakornchai, blending Wurlitzer chords, Moog basslines, ARP leads, and signature Rhodes phasings.  Nakornchai, a Master’s graduate in Jazz Studies from Mahidol University, leads his own quartet and embodies the progressive spirit of modern jazz in Thailand.
Maarten's inspiration stems from his musical upbringing; his father, Gerard Goetheer, was a jazz pianist. This environment fostered his deep appreciation for music. A pivotal moment came when he heard Masters at Work remixing Tania Maria, igniting his vision to merge genres and create something new. With Suite for Chick, Maarten wanted to incorporate a wider range of modern influences that he became infatuated with throughout his musical career such as Techno, Italo, Cosmic Disco, Dub, Acid, Boogie, Proto-House & Ambient Music. To Maarten, bringing these genres together is his current and unique interpretation of the Jazz Fusion moniker.

Prague-based producer Täino returns with ‘Street Tales’, his third solo outing, self-released with a bold yet intimate sense of independence.

Following previous work on labels including German imprint Tonal, Antwerp’s Pollen Sounds, and his own Moving Pictures, Täino delivers an EP that navigates the intersection of deep house and breakbeat rhythms. Across 3-tracks, he crafts a hybrid sound that fuses driving dancefloor energy with nuanced references to his hip-hop roots. The release subtly channels diverse influences, incorporating interludes that nod to iconic moments in hip-hop history – specifically Kendrick Lamar’s ‘DNA‘ and Kanye West’s ‘Feedback‘.

Street Tales is another personal project of mine that is coming exclusively via Bandcamp. I’ve been working on these tracks over the past few months, focusing on enjoying the process and avoiding overthinking. The Turkish word “Baba” translates to “Daddy” in English. This track by Berkay Mete showcases powerful drums, rhythmic percussive synths, and captivating arpeggios, all weaving together to tell a compelling story.

The lyrics of the first verse translate to:

Ransom Note Records are psyched to welcome the mighty Rupert Cross back to the fold with a brand, spanking new record, in the form of Strapped Out EP. Featuring the inimitable vocal talents of R$N stalwart & interdisciplinary creator C.A.R., Cross and Raunet have supplied an assemblage of devastatingly raucous tracks that will have you bouncing off the walls, floors, ceilings and fellow club goers corporeal bodies.

Eponymous track Strapped Out is first out of the gate, immediately setting the scene. Mechanical polyrhythms intertwine, falling into an automatic groove of impulsive contortions. In juxtaposition, C.A.R. lends some humanity to proceedings with a vocal performance that seems cooly spontaneous, but a little investigation reveals Chloe’s trademark lyrical wisdom. Fair weather dancers beware!

Next up, Blue Line takes some of the same ingredients, but adds a pinch of Moroder (if he was a Goth) and a generous splash of Post-Punk riotousness. A rolling, Disco Chuggathon, its slight melancholy creates an addictive listening experience. Best enjoyed poured over a 3am dance floor in a sweaty, low ceilinged club.

Pepper provides some respite from the machine funk onslaught.. but only slightly. A lethal stab of bass lunges forth from the speakers and collides with the solar plexus. Once we regain our breathe, we realise that we’re immersed in an anxiety tank, with dissonant, staccato plinks and plonks darting back and forth between ours ears. The feeling of existential suffocation has never been so pleasantly welcome.

Dreamland, Dreamland’s warpy warpy intro prefaces a jolly excursion into a theme park for machines. Fun and levity are on offer in abundance, but all must conform to the mechanical overlords. Stepping outside of the strictly gridded lines is forbidden, as we bowl along the automaton highway, greedily imbibing everything on offer.

Lastly Miles Vandersteen remixes Strapped Out, somehow upping the J.G. Ballard vibes with distorted, metallic blasts & rote drum patterns. If the original was built with the purpose of obliterating the dance floor, then this extended version aims to take down the whole club and the surrounding buildings to boot. A weapon of truly epic proportions, this is a timely reminder that humanity should consider carefully what munitions we choose to develop. “Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds”.
