PREMIERE // Hysteric - Automne [Italo Moderni]

Washington DC-based Lurid Music welcomes Belgian producer YNV for his debut album entitled “Golden Hour Ritual” that showcases his entrancing blend of avant exotica, Middle Eastern mysticism and cabaret electronica.

YNV was born in Brussels in 1979 and moved to California in 2013. He has so far released tracks on Invisible Inc and Emotional Response. Along with his upcoming debut album on Lurid Music, he has a single ready to be released on Neubau. He is a video artist and music curator for the Vague Terrain nights in San Francisco. In his music, as with his videos, he exploits the liminal space between our most disparate emotional states and the tenuous thread that binds our inner world to reality at its face value. Carrying the torch of his Euro roots, you hear the influence of his homeland with some California sunshine and a palm tree thrown in for good measure.

His LP for Lurid Music features nine original tracks of a brooding cinematic nature, transporting you to the sheltering courtyard shade of a desert riad where every movement seems as theatrically measured and eccentrically calculated as anything Tuxedomoon, The Residents or Dead Can Dance ever produced. The LP closes with a slow acid trance remix from Anatolian Weapons.

Every track has its own spirit, in a kind of a 90s journey way.
The compilation is a fascinating mixture of weird cosmic and slow goa sequences to more emotional places with powerful bassdriven downtempo techno and slightly trance influenced anthems as well as distinctive tribal acid easiness with melancholic pads and epic melodies. Furthermore it involves faster loaded minimal hypnotic synth sounds and dark UK-House with a big-beat touch to it. Raw liquid floating sharp breaks melts into rave stompers which are inhabited by sensitive living microbes vibrating jungle atmospheres.

Beesmunt Soundsystem - Volta

“All of these cars were once just a dream in somebody's head”. With the roads relocated to the skies due to the polluted water that submerged the depths of the city, gravity-defiant vehicles speed past mid-level apartments, making higher floors and penthouses the preferred choice for the city elite. The architectural manifestation of class hierarchy stares the population directly in the face, yet they choose to ignore it in favour of the status quo. The previously breathable and bright city has been replaced by exhaust fumes and the smell of decay. What happened to the infinite promise of the future? 

Moscow-based label ида (pronounced Ida) treats us with their latest EP release ‘fragment.you’ from Russian three-piece Chiranuma. The band combine live instrumentation and vocals with impressive production to build leftfield techno with an especially organic sound. Ransom Note’s pick from the release is Panorama Channel’s remix of 'Okean', an ethereal breakbeat stomper of a track. The intro, dripping in reverb and delay, builds the atmosphere before dropping into paranoia-infused futurist electro, fuelled by skipping kick drums and synth stab that sounds like a police car speeding past you.

Ears On Earth & Super Utu present Household Choirs: A selection of housebound voices singing together in harmony. From forth the abodes of 11 independent nations come 22 songs spread across two CDs inside a limited edition double jewel case designed by EOE’s Danilo.

The recent disruption of daily life has caused us to reflect and consider what we believe to be meaningful, important and what brings joy to our existence. For the dance community who have had their places of worship shut down indefinitely, a unifying space we can all occupy is a freedom of the mind. In physical confinement, freedom becomes a state of mind; A place to visit when we can’t move our bodies the way we want to. These two CDs symbolise inside and outside dance spaces made inaccessible to us by the pandemic.

So we gathered a choir of households to share their voices.

Ekahalat (River Yarra Extended Fast Edit)

For their landmark 10th release, Hard Fist is proud to have snapped up multi-talented Belgian producer and performer Strapontin for a new single including Damon Jee and Thomass Jackson remixes and a complementary & prescient video game that pokes fun at social media.

The specially designed game and accompanying music video pertains to the overall theme of the EP, which shows an absurd society obsessed with social media descending into a dystopian world. It is a paranoid graphic vision, set in Brussels, Strapontin’s hometown, that puts you in control of a role playing game as you march round the city collecting social points with scant regard for others.

Besides being a dancer, performer and on-and-off "Madame pipi", French-born, Brussels-based Strapontin is also a DJ and producer who mixes up slow and rough techno with thrilling soundtracks and groove driven disco. He has released on Nein and I'm Single amongst others and marks this 10th Hard Fist release in fine style.

Opening up the EP is 'Nervous Days', a gallivanting techno-disco groove with rugged loops and jumbled percussion that sounds like a rampage through a cityscape, as per the video. Then comes 'But The Nice One!', a stomping and rough and ready ride on lumpy drums and bass that is dark but playful. The quality continues on 'Miss Mickey the Dumbs', with some brilliantly heavy and reverberating drums making you jerk your body while sci-fi effects float and drift about up top.

Blindetonation label regular and esteemed modern disco man Thomass Jackson remixes 'But The Nice One!' In his capable hands it becomes a melon twisting workout with spangled synth lines, psyched-out synths and percolating drums that are finished with a vulnerable and eerie vocal. Last of all is a Damon Jee remix of 'Miss Mickey the Dumbs', His music can be heard on the underground’s most sought-after labels including Roam, Hafendisko, Suara and Sincopat to name just a few. His version is a more direct affair, with searching laser synths and a hypnotic space-techno vibe that carries you off to the stars at increasingly high speeds.

This is a fittingly brilliant EP from the vital Strapontin on ever-excellent Hard Fist.
