Richard Bernstein has a book on Irony, i think he talks of ironical uptake as experiencing uncanny. Since the pretense and aspiration almost always are two separate things .. one that considers this seperation and questions it is closer to uncanny

How is it that Badiou basically rejects negativity and places the importance on Christ’s resurrection rather than crucifixion when the resurrection is in itself the negation of Christ’s death and as such contains the crucifixion within it?

Arun Kudnani joins PTO to talk about his article, The Racial Constitution of Neoliberalism which appeared in the Race & Class journal. We talked about how neoliberalism has generated novel forms of racism that cannot be understood simply as residual phenomena from the pre-neoliberal era, why it was that the key neoliberal thinkers were as fixated on defeating leftist movements in the global south during the Cold War as they were on defeating the European and American Labour movements, and finally we talked about whether it is possible to imagine a form of capitalism that is able to dispense with racialisation.

What is identity politics? Recent definitions have strayed some distance from the ideas laid out by the Black radical feminists of the Combahee River Collective. In their original 1977 statement, the Boston collective established a simple but undeniable truth: what you know depends on who you are.

The problem, as American philosopher Olúfẹ́mi O. Táíwò points out, is that the most privileged members of marginalised groups can end up speaking for the group as a whole. Identity politics has been captured by elites, says Táíwò, and the effect can either be brazenly cynical – like the CIA implementing a diversity policy – or vastly more subtle.
