Regarding paranoia (mentioned in this episode): [1] Are Marxists structurally paranoiac? In Enjoying What We Don't Have it says, "For the paranoid subject, the surface inconsistency of social authority hides an underlying consistency authorized by a real authority whom most subjects never notice." So, for instance, Marxists note the inconsistency of social authority (the anarchy of the market) but then posit an Other of the Other in the form of a ruling class, the bourgeoisie, who pull the strings. Of course, some Marxists emphasize that even capitalists are castrated, i.e., are not free to do as they please and are themselves subject to market forces; nonetheless, much of the time the ruling class is represented by Marxists to each other and perhaps to ourselves that capitalists have real agency and authority to choose. If Marxism isn't paranoia, what differentiates it? [2] Is your explication of paranoia idiosyncratic or are there other texts which can you recommend on this subject?

@aike-aike-38130395: They are structurally very similar, right. But the whole point of hysterical provocation is that there is no master behind the scenes. It's not just that the Other of the Other is invisible but that no such figure exists for the hysteric, which is what hysteria decries. Best, Todd

Hi guys, thanks for the show. Aren't most European constitutional monarchies some sort of politics of the big Other? Especially with most people not believing in the Crown as a political figure with "real" power?

I think a good example of the Big Other operating on the left is the equation racism = prejudice + power

Professor Paul Gilbert, FBPsS, PhD, OBE is a British clinical psychologist, the founder of compassion focused therapy (CFT), compassionate mind training (CMT) and author of books such as The Compassionate Mind: A New Approach to Life’s Challenges, Overcoming Depression.

He has researched evolutionary approaches to psychopathology for over 40 years with a special focus on the roles of mood, shame and self-criticism in various mental health difficulties for which Compassion Focused Therapy was developed. Professor Gilbert has written/edited 21 books and over 200 papers. In 2006 he established the Compassionate Mind Foundation as an international charity with the mission statement: “To promote wellbeing through the scientific understanding and application of compassion”.
