Description: The sounds of wildlife at night in the African bush. This album was recorded in Northern Tuli Game Reserve in Botswana and features the sounds of some iconic species often heard at night in Africa's savannas and woodlands, including lion, leopard, elephant, Spotted Hyena and Black-backed Jackal, as well as nocturnal birds such as Pearl-spotted Owlet & African Scops Owl.

While exploring my local woodland during Winter Storm Bobby on 1/29/2022, I noticed a particularly loud and frequent creaking and popping coming from a large, dual-trunked yellow popular, Liriodendron tulipifera.

Upon further inspection, I found the popular was hollow and had a large, vertical crack running about 25' up the trunk. 

I setup my SASS microphone directly in front of the cavity and recorded for about an hour.

Unfortunately, a snow blower polluted most of the recording but I was able to capture about 20 minutes of pure tree creaks and pops! This recording is an excerpt from that longer file.

I plan to revisit this tree during every major wind storm with the hope of capturing the moment that it gives way and returns to the forest floor...stay tuned :)

The last days of February were colder and a solid ice of about three inches formed partially one mile out to sea. The Whooper Swans had arrived past week but what I think could be Bean Goose appeared for the first time. At 9 min a fox is crying. 

The sea water was rising due to an arriving low front. This and because the ice was new and solid, causes the crackling sounds. I was lucky to experience this, as it is absolutely not a common phenomenon, at least not here by the sea shore.  The picture with a big Venus and new moon was taken during the recording.
