Ancient Forests Morning Soundscape, Distant Gibbons Symphony, Belum Temenggor, Malaysia

With my many trips out recording in the field, this track personally for me is one of the most beautiful sounds I have recorded.

It was at 3:50am on the 13th of June 2012 on the banks of the river Waveny near Geldeston, Suffolk, UK. I had set up the microphones the evening before and ran a 50-metre cable back to a boat. 
Luckily there was very little wind to affect the recording and to my delight as the dawn chorus began, a Song Thrush (Turdus philomelos) came close to my microphones and started to sing his beautiful song.
Many other songbirds are singing and calling, including Blackbird, Wren, Tawny Owl, Cockerel and a Cuckoo halfway through this recording.
No wonder so many poets such as Tomas Hardy, Robert Browning, William Wordsworth and Edward Thomas have included this bird in their poems describing its wonderful song.

 It was pure joy resting on my bed in the boat wearing my headphones, listening live as I was recording this beautiful song. Not a bad way to start the day!
 The photo is of the location, taken the evening before as I was setting up the microphones and cable.

A group of Little Shrike Thrush whistle melodious phrases, responding to each other's calls. Superb & Wompoo Fruit Doves provide a bassline, & at about 1:05 you can hear Wompoo fly in, it's wings whoosh through the air. Towards the end a Black Butcherbird chortles, and the rasp of a Victoria's Riflebird is heard in the background.

Mountain Scops Owl, Barking Deer and various insects can be heard on the forest soundscape recorded in the evening on the slopes of Doi Inthanon in northern Thailand.

Recorded just outside of a Village in Southern Poland, a variety of birds singing and chirruping, with the distant sound of aircraft in the background. 
The occasional sound of a woodpecker can be heard, as well as the occasional insect. In the forest there was a space for people to pray, - a small church and a man-made waterfall, and also I was told that there was once a battle close-by. 
This was recorded in April 2016 and one particular memory of this time of spring was watching the caddisfly larvae navigating their way around a small stream.

Deep in the lowland rainforests of Ulu Muda, a family of Smooth-coated Otter (Lutrogale perspicillata) swim up a small creek hunting for fish and crustaceans. In this sample you can hear some interaction calls between the otters and the sounds of insects and birds in the surrounding forest.

Recorded in predawn light by a swamp in Ulu Muda's rainforest. In the latter part of this sample you can hear the unusual calls of Rough-sided Frogs (Pulchrana glandulosa). Agile Gibbons can be heard singing in the background along with the occasional chattering calls of Banded Langur.

Morning birdsong from dry dipterocarp forest in Thung Yai West Wildlife Sanctuary, part of Thailand's western forest complex.  The sounds of this open habitat are quite different from the moist evergreen forests found on the nearby hills and gullies. 

In this sample crickets stridulate from the grassy understorey and a Greater Flameback (a type of large forest woodpecker) can be heard tapping, drumming and calling. Other species heard in this cut include: Grey-headed Parakeet, Hair-crested Drongo, Coppersmith Barbet, Black-hooded Oriole, White-browed Scimitar-Babbler, Black-crested & Red-whiskered Bulbuls and Plain Flowerpecker. White-handed Gibbons can be heard calling from the distant hills.

Kutini-Payamu (Iron Range) National Park is a vast area of lowland rainforest in near the tip of Cape York in the far north of Australia.  The biodiversity here is  more akin with the lowland forests of New Guinea, and for a significant number of species this area is the southern limit of their distribution. In this sample you can hear the loud whistles of a Magnificent Riflebird and the squawks of Eclectus Parrots, along with many other species in the background.

New Guinea is home to the largest expanse of rainforest in the Asia-Pacific region (and the third largest rainforest in the world after the Amazon and Congo). Vast areas of undisturbed forest can be found throughout the island and its biodiversity is simply amazing.

In 2019, I spent five days in an area of pristine lowland rainforest on the Birds Head Peninsula in West Papua. This album, ‘New Guinea: Dawn in Lowland Rainforest’, was recorded on my final morning at this location. Rising early, well before dawn, I placed the recording gear in a stunning area of forest I had scouted the previous day. The album covers a period of one hour from predawn darkness, through the rich dawn chorus and ends as the soundscape settles and the diurnal insect activity increases.
