In the Australian winter, Pied Currawongs often form flocks and search out fruiting trees to raid. I set up my recording gear in front of a native Lilli Pilli tree in full fruit, and it was only a matter of time before the currawongs arrived and enjoyed one of their winter parties!

A group of Little Shrike Thrush whistle melodious phrases, responding to each other's calls. Superb & Wompoo Fruit Doves provide a bassline, & at about 1:05 you can hear Wompoo fly in, it's wings whoosh through the air. Towards the end a Black Butcherbird chortles, and the rasp of a Victoria's Riflebird is heard in the background.

After leaving my gear out to capture the sounds of dusk, I retrieved the kit after dark & expected to hear a gentle evening chorus upon reviewing the recording. However, it seems a herd of wild pigs had spent most of the afternoon in the clearing where I left the microphones, snuffling around and gorging themselves on some sort of piggy delights. I'm just glad they didn't gobble down the backpack or recording gear!

My alarm was set for 5am local time, about 45 minutes before the dawn chorus had been starting up on recent mornings in the hills. But I hadn't taken account of the full moon. Beware the power of the moon in a clear sky. When I switched on the recorder a few minutes later, this was what I heard: the larks all in full swing. 

There are Calandra Larks, Lesser Short-toed Larks and the incomparable Dupont's Lark here.

An excerpt from a 4 hour recording which, for the most part, captured Taman Negara's gentle nocturnal soundscape . However on this excerpt the peaceful twinkling of insects & cooing of frogs is interrupted by alarm calls from a Spectacled Langur high in the canopy. Without good nocturnal vision, perhaps the langurs could smell a predator, or hear it's footsteps on the forest floor below. 

I remember waking up in our tent hearing these langurs at about 4:30am, and when we emerged from the tent at sunrise, the distinctive pugmarks of a Leopard were left in the sand only inches from where I slept. Perhaps it was attracted to my pig-like snoring?!

Le campement est posé sur le bord de mer. Et surprise, des Chouettes chevêches (Athene noctua) se réveillent dans un tintamarre grandissant. Vite la parabole Dodotronic et le Tascam DR05X ! Parmi plusieurs séquences de sons, celle-ci est retenue. D'autres sont déposées sur xeno-canto. Avec les sons en arrière plan de la turbulence humaine, des Pélodytes ponctués (Pelodytes punctatus), des Grenouilles rieuses (Pelophylax ridibundus) et de rares Rainettes méridionales (Hyla meridionalis).

The camp is set on the seaside. And surprise, Little Owls (Athene noctua)wake up in a growing din. Quickly the Dodotronic parabola and the Tascam DR05X! Among several sequences of sounds, this one is retained. Others are deposited on xeno-canto. With background sounds of human turbulence, the Common Parsley Frog (Pelodytes punctatus), the Marsh Frog(Pelophylax ridibundus) and rare songs of the Mediterranean Tree Frogs (Hyla meridionalis).
