Jean-Michel Blais and CFCF are both accomplished musicians. Their collaborative work on the 'Cascades' EP, which is out March 15th on Arts & Crafts, is a heartbreakingly pretty collection of lush explorations pulled forward by warm piano and a fluid mix of new age calm and forward-thinking ambient. "In a Landscape (Rework)," as the parenthetical suggests, is a cover – of sorts – of a piece by John Cage of the same name. It premiered on RBMA Radio's Discreet Music, our weekly deep-dive into all manner of experimental sounds.

Excited for this month as our second guest dj and long time friend comes from Brooklyn, NY by way of the quiet East Bay salt flats. J_G also known as Jay Goitia is a producer making up one half of the Ambient / Kraut group Goitia Deitz @goitia-deitz among many other sonic projects. For this month, we have a beautiful textural set mixing obscure geothermal ethno ambient tracks taking us into some mystical hazy jungle.

The ‘Make Techno Black Again’ mix is a tribute to the extended thoughts and techniques that went into the composition of Detroit techno. In the wake of the collapse of the Ford Industry and subsequent “white flight,” techno in response was political and rebellious. 

To quote Gerald Donald (Drexicya/ Dopplereffekt), “[Electronic music] in particular is a response to urban decadence and the entire spectrum of the socio-economic condition. It’s an expression of a dystopian condition.”

Expanding from these words, the mix is designed to be a self-reflective and non-linear tour of Detroit techno as a machine of momentum and an expansion of black music with the aid of newly acquired technology. Jeff Mills’ DJ sets with Underground Resistance in which hardware drum machines and synthesizers were hotwired into Mill’s own three vinyl deck setup was my main source of inspiration, wanting to recreate the fearless experimentalism of a live techno set from the 90s. Techno is assembly line music at its most beautiful and gritty.

Banging Parisian techno, modern classical from New York, drum machine voodoo, classic left-field Chicago house, and everything else in between feature on the 22-track mix. Also featured is "Red Mud II", a polyrhythmic "ethno techno" track from Omniscient Wildin'. Mixed live on turntables. Artwork by Josh Gurrie. Hey folks,

"Tambourine Dream 2" is finally here! This project has been a real journey for me.  The mix has been finished and sitting on the “shelf” for over four years. Various circumstances (personal and professional) kept me from releasing it when I originally intended to. This is not the summer that I had imagined for "Tambourine Dream 2" to be shared with the world, but I hope you can enjoy the music wherever you may be.

Okay! A little backstory on why Tambourine Dream 2 took so damn long to come out. I feel like I owe you all an explanation since many of you have inquired over the years and have been patient.

After touring from the success of "Tambourine Dream," I got back into the studio reworking new songs that I thought could use the Pocketknife touch. The idea always was to immediately follow up "Tambo D" with another mix. Around that same time, a reputable European label (that starts with a “K” and ends with a “7”) approached us about making "Tambourine Dream" a new series for them. The direction of this new mix series would be focused on official edits/reworks of independent and lesser-known songwriters. 

Long story short, the label disappeared a year into the project without explanation and "Tambourine Dream 2" fell back into my lap. Regardless, I continued to rework more indie folk tunes in hopes that another label would pick up the project and do the licensing legwork for me. A few years later, another label became interested in the project and started the licensing process as "Tambourine Dream 2" was being finished. Believe-it-or-not, this licensing stretched well over two years and not all of my reworks could be secured (even in that lengthy time frame). Without proper licensing for enough tracks, the label did not want to release the project, so "Tambourine Dream 2" came back to me once again.

Fast forward to today and here is the mix for you to enjoy gratuit! Download it, share it with your grandma, mother-in-law or auntie. A special limited-edition metallic gold cassette of "Tambourine Dream 2" will drop in late August.

The darker days of the year are here again and it's been quite some time since a new EXTRA ALCHEMY mix has been released to celebrate the "spooky season." A collection of acousmatic sorcery, witched-out radiophonics, spectral drone, pagan pop and haunted sound collages to set the mood . As usual for EXTRA ALCHEMY no soundtracks were used, just murky gurgling tunes pulled from the darkness and mixed on a set of turntables. Happy Halloween!

Wilde Calm Records is a Cambridge (via Brooklyn) boutique label started by DJ/producer/sound designer Skooby Laposky who records under the monikers Boonlorm and Pocketknife.  The label will focus on releasing a wide variety of styles and sounds from artists interested in expanding the syntax of electronic music and the possibilities of what dance music can be.
