PREMIERE: Steø - Side Effects [ONI012]

Gwo Ka is music born in Guadeloupe and stands for big drum. It is the union of music, dance, and spirit. 
Two drummers are playing a specific rhythm as the base. The “Makè”, the third drummer, is placed at the center to follow, feel and whisper any of the dancers gestures. He matches the rhythm and energy of the dancers, becoming their shadow, and establishing a real dialogue between them. 
With my project I want to translate the rhythms of Gwo Ka in every upcoming mix. 
There are seven specific rhythms.
This one is "Mennde", dedicated to celebration and escape.

Another live recording from the Reclaim Your City X Token night in early November and this one‘s a banger. Marcal is the budding Brazilian star act you may have heard of, commanding recognition post pandemic with his highly addictive loops. That’s certainly true in the case of Radio Slave, who played one of the former’s tracks on his show for Rinse FM and sought out the talent responsible. A serendipitous (online) meeting that blossomed into a deeper connection and had Marcal signed to Rekids, Enemy Records and Token. And here they are a little down the line and all the luckier for it. Marcal’s focus is on intelligent and minimal builds, those that work by way of rhythmic complexity and highly developed textures, brainy techno with a pinch of mischief. Bassiani Podcast 192 is a prime example of that formula in action, a two hour dose of the finest cuts and hardest basslines recorded live on the Bassiani floor.

The Fuse Brussels resident has racked up quite a following with his club focused sound, both via slick releases as much as behind decks spinning vinyl-only sets. Post-punk, wave, EBM, electro, Detroit and Berlin provide the context for a curious talent that has published warped melodies on blue chip labels like Soma, SK Eleven, Stockholm LTD and Planet Rhythm. His off kilter earmark is available too via his ‘gimmick-free’ record label Phaaar, a more immediate and personal vessel for his own experiments in sound. And it’s not all off the shelf, 2022 saw him take his Korg EMX-1 onstage for a debut live performance that presents yet another side to his many-layered craft, and a new alias titled In Glass promises to reimagine both house and dubbier references. With bated breath comes this next instalment, powerful beats from the get go, tracks with striking forward momentum interwoven with atomic precision and a primary feeling for ambiance that doesn’t miss a trick. Sciahriar ‘Sciahri’ Tavakoli, an Italo/Iranian DJ and producer, has been a prominent figure in the techno scene since his 2014 debut EP Mysterious Love on Ilian Tape. His sound navigates the full spectrum of techno, blending functional rhythms with experimental textures, a versatility mirrored in his dynamic DJ sets.

Sciahri has made his mark with releases on renowned labels like Warm Up, Non Series, Clergy, Semantica, Mord, and 47. Since 2017, he has also run Sublunar Records, a platform showcasing forward-thinking techno from both established and emerging artists, including Temudo, D-Leria, Cirkle, Oscar Mulero, Kangding Ray, and Adriana Lopez.

This mix offers a snapshot of Sciahri’s recent sets, featuring a minimal yet driving selection designed to maintain energy and keep listeners immersed.

Guided by the rhythm of drums, his musical journey is defined by hypnotic introspections and consistent energy flow. It is precisely the union of these elements which allows the mind to wander and the body to keep moving. A strictly warm and organic sound, dominated by low frequencies and percussive elements is Windfuhr’s signature touch. 

Music as a tool - to explore himself and to build a dialogue with the audience. His Guadeloupean heritage enables him to capture and adapt the musical tradition of `Gwo Ka‘ - which in Creole means “big drum”- into each one of his mixes. Gwo Ka is the combination of sound and movement through the rhythms played on the drums and the dances of the audience. In its traditional form, drummers and dancers merge into an infinite interaction of rhythms and gestures giving life to a communal performance. 
Inspired by his roots, Windfuhr translates this tradition into contemporary soundscapes with the aim to emphasize the connection between dance, spirit and music. The philosophy of communication through sound lies at the roots of his passion: by reading and understanding the energy of the dancers, he becomes their shadow and allows the creation of a story where everyone is the author. 
To connect with people but also to disconnect from reality sums up his commitment to this form of art.
