I started making this piece with the intention of it being a set of songs that could stand on their own as well as being an open collaboration, but then it took on a life of its own, and things just got out of hand from there, lol! 

But I still managed to control myself and didn’t add too many samples though, haha! 

I was listening to 1985 and 1986 hip hop singles when making this so….

You can download this for free as well as some of the unmixed stems on Bandcamp. The lyrics can also be found on Bandcamp since SC didn’t provide enough space in the song info. I reached my description limit!

This song began more than a year ago, when Josh created a song out of a looper beat with his four string fretless bass. It sat on the shelf until a few weeks ago, when he shared it with JJ, who was in creative mode one Saturday evening. Josh had actually forgotten that he'd added a bass line to it, and thought he was just passing on a looper beat for JJ to play with. 
  However, JJ heard it, and was so excited that added his magical electric piano part, making it sound like a real song, instead of just drums and a bass. Ken also heard some magic in here, because he came up with his own brilliant beat to replace the looper that was used in for the seed. Mark was next to throw in, adding the striking drum pattern breakdown, and the thrilling flute solo, as well. Tez came in shortly after, adding his thrilling guitar to the mix. After everyone had added their parts, Josh came back and added two guitar parts, the simple low end line, as well as the high strumed triads. At this stage, Mark did some editing, as it is in his skill set, and made it less dense and easier to listen to. 
  Now that the song was musically complete, out newest member, Carl, dropped the amazing vocals you hear, singing his original lyrics. After Carl was done sprinkling his magic in it, we needed an able producer to bring out the magic of the recordings. Good thing we have a trained producer to do the job in Stephen, who mixed and mastered it superbly, as always. 
  This is Eclectic Collective's first fore into the afrobeat genre, although a few of us are really big fans already, and Josh has a few other originals in this genre buried on his page, as well. As always, we all enjoyed the process of hearing this one come together. We hope you enjoy listening to this as much as we enjoyed making it.

Hello…. So who is Darwin the cat… really? I suppose just an old recluse like me. An older cat who I was tasked with cat-sitting this summer. Initially, I never saw him. Ha. Then one day, he appeared out of nowhere and we became best buds. He became talkative and encouraged me to ask him about life. I would ask him something and he would tell me all about it. So of course here’s a song about our shenanigans. A simple song. Ukulele, vox, and some finger-tapping keyboard percussion. In other news, tiny chickadees have been following me around the yard when I water, and a new generation of rabbits hang out near the small patches of red clover I planted around the yard... They stretch out and relax in the shade during the day. I laugh at them. The raccoon(s) come through late at night, and sometimes I hear them scream, which does sound weirdly unnerving. A hawk is in and about hunting the yard for small birds and whatnot. The birds in the yard, head into the spruce tree branches where the hawk cannot go. I built a small branch wall around the fire ant mound back by the compost pile, as someone keeps digging into it, maybe the coons or possibly flickers trying to get at the larvae. Now the mound is really built up as the ant colony has worked feverishly to rebuild it. That particular ant colony has been here for decades. Plenty of apples and wild plums now, so I have to be alert when going outside late at night, as maybe the bear will return in the midst of hyperphagia, to gorge on the apples. There were some deer here briefly as well. I have begun autumn chores in preparation for the long winter here and have taken to eating apples and plums from the trees, as I take a break from my chores. I could be a bear… hahahahaha. The Way You Stay is a very personal song I originally wrote just for a close friend. After hearing it, he told me I should definitely release it – and so I did.

It tells about the importance of being there for each other – especially when life gets heavy.

It’s about the quiet strength of caring and the love that lies within those moments. About two people who carry each other and the closeness that grows from it.

But this song is not only for him – it’s for everyone who cares for others, quietly, steadily, and wholeheartedly.

A song about trust, friendship, and the strength that comes from staying.

Behind the music:
From the beginning I knew I wanted a choir in this song. I thought about it for a long time, wondering how it could work. In the end, I recorded more than 24 vocal tracks – all with my own voice – and processed them in such a way that the choir is made up of many little Axels.

I truly hope you enjoy listening to it.
