full description: ""in pieces - volume one" - taumel meets ensemble adapter

in winter 2016, 'taumel' and the 'ensemble adapter' met for several improvisational sessions to develop an evening of music in which the contrasts and boundaries between composition and improvisation, freedom and determination, chaos and structure were to blur or collide. the sessions focused on the development of a specific, sound-gestural musical language. in a way, each musician developed kind of a character on his instrument and its own specific sound-gesture. we recorded these sessions and used them as a basis for "in pieces. "in pieces" consists of the remixes of these sessions, as well as additional studio material produced by taumel.

"in pieces" can be understood as a sureal sound poem, an abstract sound story that wanders through the most different states - from greatest happiness to frenzy and madness. in the 2 mutating sound fields, the associative story revolves around the theme of linguistic inalienability and thus also around the theme of 'chaos and order'. this ambiguity, the attempt at beauty and its overturning into destruction and failure. attempts at writing, attempts at speaking, stammering, stuttering, screaming, constriction, drifting away, humming... in the mutation of states, heterogeneous sound events meet or are mixed to a new kind of soundmash between song, voices, melody, harmony, instruments, noise, beats, riffs, words, electronics and alienation. the action of the instrumentalists (the instrument playing) is on the same level as any other sound producing action or vocal expression as well as any electronic sound production and is always meant gesturally, performatively, as action, as acoustic dance.

"volume one" is the first part of a musical context planned as a two-part work ("in pieces - volume two). in two sound parts (side a, side b) "in pieces - volume one" is not a song cycle like our other series, e.g. TRAUM, but rather a musical 2-act, later altogether 4-act. here the overall form of the musical series is not divided into albums and songs, but into albums and their a+b sides, like act 1, 2, 3 and 4. perhaps, therefore, "in pieces" can also be heard as an acoustic theater, or as a radio play without words, or as a soundtrack without a film, or as a film without a picture, or simply as an order of changing sound events.

"off the record"
in "off the record" taumel meets other musicians and develops albums in collaboration. here different forms of musical interaction can be tried out. in this case of "in pieces" the collaboration with the "ensemble adapter" consisted in these sessions, which form the basic framework and skeleton for the whole album.

The UFO phenomenon shows a constant tendency to adapt itself to the technological imaginary of the historical period in which it occurs. From the first mechanical forms of the last century, we have progressively reached the current energetic and intangible manifestations, of which the E.B.A.N.I. can be considered the most spectacular and disturbing expression. With the term E.B.A.N.I. are defined a whole series of aerial phenomena, which present characteristics that can be compared in appearance to living beings, in form as well as in movements. Is this perhaps the final adaptation, in the middle of the information age, of a living occult reality that hides behind our technological dream, before its definitive revelation?

"E.B.A.N.I. Drones" is the sound transposition of these celestial apparitions, beyond any will of interpretation of the phenomenon or easy cataloging. A dreamlike and surreal journey between sidereal anxieties and apocalyptic suggestions, in the contemplation of these new angelic legions made of luminous tubular structures and floating liquid metal.

SILICON RELIC is a new Italian industrial drones / dark-ambient project, which aims to describe and portray in music the remains and parodies of the sacred and the spirit in the age of disenchantment. The group - composed of Moreno Padoan and Cristian Luise, active for years in the industrial / experimental scene with various monickers - wishes to return with this project to the origins of the genre, combining genuine aesthetic and sound research with a solid conceptual and philosophical approach.

Chris Liberator started djing back in 1991 playing his first ever party in a squat in North London (organised with the fledgling Liberator crew featuring himself, Julian and Aaron). Liberator soon made a name for themselves putting on parties in and around North East London in squats and underground venues, and it wasn’t long before they began hooking up
with other crews doing similar stuff including Bedlam, Full On, Zero Gravity and Megadog who they all played regularly for with their firebrand mix of Acid, hard Techno and Rave. Getting involved with the illegal raves kicking off in the UK at the time (including Lechlade and Castle Morton) via their numerous traveller connections saw them hook up with crews out in Europe from Prague and Holland and they began travelling internationally as well. In 1993 they began their label Stay Up Forever to represent their own unique style, and as it progressed and they met more producers like DDR, D.A.V.E. The Drummer, Gizelle, Geezer and Lawrie Immersion, the sound of London Techno and Acid Techno as we know it was born. Chris went on to start the SUF Collective (which he runs with Aaron Liberator) and began DJing across the world including places as far flung as Brazil, Venezuela, Japan, South Africa and Australia, and his name quickly became synonymous with the sound of the London Techno he represented. Meanwhile he continued to support his roots playing thousands of squat parties and underground raves in London, UK and Europe, keeping it firmly ‘real’ despite making DJ mag’s top 100 dj list on several occasions and producing some of the era’s most popular Acd Techno mix cds. Musically he has been behind some of the scenes biggest anthems including ONE NIGHT IN HACKNEY (with D.A.V.E.The Drummer), LONDON ACID CITY (with Lawrie Immersion) , CROYDON GIRL (with Sterling Moss and Rackitt), SCUM LIKE US (with Sterling Moss), X RAY OK , SOUL MANTRA and many, many more. Chris was originally a punk on the early eighties Anarcho punk scene and carries his sense of DIY and anti system
principles from then, and still plays in 2 punk bands (Dogshite and Hagar The Womb) as well as DJ ing classic punk and reggae sets. Chris still only plays on vinyl and is just as dedicated to his art and philosophy as he was when he started 30 years ago!!!

Chris Liberator - Beats Donor [011]

We welcome Nicolas Van Meirhaeghe (Penumbral Aethyr) to our label for the first time, as well as the return of Peter Verwimp (Ashtoreth), who is no stranger to releasing with Winter-Light. These two well known Belgian artists of the dark ambient scene present us with new immersive ritual works.

For this collaborative album, Ashtoreth and Penumbral Aethyr were inspired by the link between a number of mythological creatures from several ancient Cultures and their emotional representations.

Like Boreas, the rough and cruel God of Wind, Cold and Darkness; Nephthys, Goddess of Birth and the Underworld; Ptah, the original creator God in ancient Enneadic Cosmogony and Naiad, the Water Elemental of the Earth. As such she can summon and control all water in her immediate environment and manifest herself from that source.

Water is linked to the emotions and therefore they chose Naiad as the fitting moniker for their album. These recordings are steeped in deeply felt emotions and meditations on both personal and general reflections about the state of the world and our place within it.

The Belgian duo composed these pieces using only hardware, electro-acoustics, voices and field recordings. No audio plug-ins were used for the recording of 'Naiad'.

CD comes in a 6-panel digi-sleeve limited to 300 copies.

Winter-Light is a record label and online store based in Noord-Holland, The Netherlands, specialising in deep ambient, experimental and drone soundscapes.

Our goal is to release new and interesting music within these genres without imposing limitations on the possibilities. Exploring new areas, pushing at known boundaries, or working within current structures can always produce beautiful and interesting results.

Working in conjunction with Midnight Sun Studio, we create visual pieces to accompany our releases. The creation of motion graphics, put to out there and interesting electronic music; that is adding another dimension altogether.
