August 20th is the birthday of PAMS of Dallas.  70 years old as of today.  Here's some PAMS oddballs for you.

This piece was inspired by the New Zealand television series One Lane Bridge. It is intended as background music for an imaginary scene in which the main character Ariki Davis has strong, threatening visions.

This is my contribution to Disquiet Junto Project 0517: Inside Out (Co/Exist 2 of 3). This week's assignment: record a minute or two of civilization (however you interptet "civilization").

This was recorded during a brief trip to Bilbao a couple of weeks ago.

Few things connote the idea of a place inhabited by humans better than the sounds of traffic and public transport. Public transport sounds tend to be very cyclic, rhythmical, but the beat of these mechanical escalators in Bilbao's metro peaked my curiosity. I was carrying luggage, but had just enough time to whip out my recorder and binaurals and go all the back up the escalators and down again. The sounds appeared to be a very apt welcome to a city known for its industrial heritage.

The king of civilization devices: the washing machine! If you watch a scene in a science fiction movie, let's say some Klingons in a Bird of Prey (or: Spock on Vulcan) and can't imagine a washing machine in this world, then you know: This is no civilization. (But look for Androids washing at the river …)

Recorded with a Zoom H4n. Six cycles of waiting and cycling.

Outside In: A Washing Machine [disquiet0517]

This is the second of a three-part project sequence. You can participate in all three parts, or any two of the three, or even just any one of them. There is one step for this project: Record a minute or two of civilization: automobile traffic, jack hammers, conversations among people, refrigerator hums, electric toothbrushes, however it is that you might define civilization.

Track notes:

This is a short binaural recording I made this morning in Pityarilla, the traditional Kaurna name for a section of the parklands to the south of the Adelaide CBD. I'd originally intended to make a recording in the city centre as everyone scrambles to do their xmas shopping, but as I passed through the parklands, I thought an intersection of lots of different sounds (natural and anthropogenic) - with a fair bit of acoustic transparency - might be the way to go. I think it adequately documents a beautiful late-Spring Saturday morning in Adelaide. 

A bit about the location itself: A narrow creek runs through through the park and a few years ago the banks were widened, filled with large rocks and reeds, and also revegetated with native plants. It's a huge improvement on the sad little creek that once wound its way past trash, decaying willows and other unwelcome non-native vegetation. Since this Adelaide Spring has been one of the wettest in over a decade, the creek is still full of water in late November, just on the cusp of Summer heat. It's also got frogs now! Spotted Grass Frogs (Limnodynastes tasmaniensi) - with big thanks to Jeremy Hegge for correctly identifying the species here. You can hear them throughout this recording.

The recording was made from a circular footbridge with benches on either side. I positioned the Zoom VR-03 on the bench facing the creek in an easterly direction. The Marshmallow Playground is adjacent to the creek and along with the aforementioned frogs, you will hear a children's birthday party, whilst a bicycle and people pass over the bridge. Birds feature on the near-periphery, and the thrum of morning traffic can be heard further afield.

I combined undermulden's Coast at Møns Klint (disquiet0516) and Krakenkraft's Outside In: A Washing Machine [disquiet0517].  Both feature water.

undermulden's track was left alone and mixed down a bit.  Krakenkraft's track was duplicated several times, rearranged for a more consistent rhythm, and made a bit louder.  The washing machine "arrangement" gets louder as the track progresses, particularly at the 27 second mark.
