I know you tried to make something you didn't like but I think this is actually quite good. I can hear it as the soundtrack for strange little stop motion animation short film. Love it!

I totally agree with the other comments: This is not ugly at all! And it is a great track with all these "strange" sound-elements.

The Assignment: Stop doing something you always do.

That was difficult because I actually try to ignore rules all the time, but of course I know that I surely follow rules, that are just invisible for me at the moment.

So I started making something ugly because I always try to make "beautiful" music. The first results were so ugly that I couldn't stand it. 

I started minimizing the noise but tried to keep it erratic, discordant, unstructured (yet some structure crept in anyway). At some point it felt unfinished, but somehow like a chartbreaker for the insane top10. Thats where I stopped.

The Rules [disquiet0653]

This track was inspired by this week's Disquiet Junto project: Breaking a rule you usually follow when making music.
So I created a track in which I don't try to keep the listener's attention by adding changes, developments or so-called "ear candy" to mainly harmonic compositions.

"Thinks of things you consider unbreakable rules when you make music" ... pretty much without fail, pitch cv goes through a quantiser; and pretty much without fail, there's some regular tempo or timekeeping... so skipping both these rules for this krell patch.

In studying the graphic score "True Glimpses 1" by Franziska Baumann, the abstract notations reminded me of the random generative sounds that can be created using a Krell Patch on a modular synthesizer. In this piece, I used a version of the patch on a semi-modular Make Noise Easel – 0-Coast, 0-Ctrl and Strega. The audio was recorded to Ableton Live where I added reverb from Valhalla Supermassive. An additional track was added via MIDI keyboard using the Fors Tela plugin. Used Supermassive again as well as Aberrant DSP Lair "occult reverberator" for effects on that track. Disquiet Junto Project 0654: Just Notation
The Assignment: Interpret a graphic score by Franziska Baumann.

This project is the second of three that are being done over the course of as many months in collaboration with the 2024 Musikfestival Bern, which will be held in Switzerland from September 4 through 8 (details at musikfestivalbern.ch). We are working at the invitation of Tobias Reber, an early Junto participant, who manages the festival’s educational activities. This year is the sixth in a row that the Junto has collaborated with Musikfestival Bern.

Step 1: Spend time observing this graphic score by Franziska Baumann, the Swiss composer and musician who is part of this year’s Musikfestival Bern. It is titled True Glimpses 1. There is a larger version available for download 12. More on Baumann at franziskabaumann.ch 7.

Step 2: Consider how the image in Step 1 can be interpreted as a graphic score. (If you’re unfamiliar with the concept of graphic notation, read up and join the conversion at the llllllll.co 3 link below.)

Step 3: Record a piece of music that interprets the graphic score from Step 1.

Label: Include “disquiet0654” (no spaces/quotes) in the name of your track.

Upload: Post your track to a public account (SoundCloud preferred but by no means required). It’s best to focus on one track, but if you post more than one, clarify which is the “main” rendition.

Created some loops and played them through a bone conduction speaker. Then used the speaker as a vibration tool to resonate a plastic bottle that had once contained sparkling spring water. It was recorded it using a contact mic over the mouth of the bottle. Moving the speaker about by hand changes how it resonates, less pressure on the speaker will make it vibrate and buzz. Some EQing, but no further effects added.

Was going to interpret the markings on the cello as originally described in the prompt, but ended up taking a different approach. I used an online tool called Image2MIDI. It generated five tracks of 15 bar MIDI notes from the cello back image based on musical parameters I entered on a form. The tool appeared to use the overall light and dark shades of the image for note generation. I then took the MIDI file and imported it into Ableton Live. Instruments were assigned to each track – a mix of built-in and Fors.fm plugins. I made adjustments to the notes and looped them out to about three minutes. A little reverb was the only additional effect used. 

I could see investigating Image2MIDI some more, and maybe using it again as a staring off point for future experiments. I initially wasn't going to take part this week but am glad I did. The assignment turned out to be enjoyable, as well as a good learning experience, so I'm glad I participated. Pattern image by Andrew Ridley via Unsplash.
