PREMIERE: ALI X X XIMENA - CALOR (PVLOMO REMIX) [Controlla]

The acclaimed Catalan DJ and producer Esprit Divers is back with "Sanasana," the name of his latest single, which comes accompanied by three remixes, the first by Curses' Venice Arms side project and two versions made by the in-house producers Theus Mago & Moisees.

Esprit Divers, also known as Coyu, has been very active in recent months, and his most recent collaboration with his remix of Sierra Madre's "Cumbres" has been a success. Now, he returns to Duro with "Sanasana," a techno cut that features chopped vocals, revealing pads, and synthesizers that drift you away, while the rhythm keeps you in a trance state.

The first remix, made by Venice Arms, the alternate project of Curses, is forceful, aggressive, and booming. With a retro-futuristic vibe, it's full of resonant synthesizers, alarms, and lasers that take you to another dimension.

The final two remixes, made by Duro's founding artists Theus Mago and Moisees, are equally impressive. The first is a powerful, incandescent, and acid cut with techno and rave influences that make you feel like you're at a warehouse party. The "Fluffy Mix" * that closes the EP, also made by Theus Mago and Moisees, takes you on a dreamlike journey with its resonant arpeggios and sedative pads that transport you between clouds and colors.

We *are* living in the future. In fact, this text could've been written by an AI text generator, and you would probably not notic it, if it wasn't for the odd typo.

This track was conceived out of need to fantasize a utopian vision of the future, as the current version of the here and now can be rather depressing and discouraging. 

Davin Varda approached Middle Sky Boom, a fellow traveler, to collaborate on this track. He gladly accepted, and nailed the vocals in one sweet session. 

This release includes two more versions of the song. The extended dubby version by Troles Yuri is a more minimalistic alternative to the song, subtracting elements and stretching the pounding beat into a full club experience.

The Middle Sky Boom version is a remix of a remix, sending the track spinning around the earth in an abandoned spaceship full of chirping computers going in and out of sync.

London-based event-series Gradient launches its label and kicks off the new era with a four-tracker from Brent, which goes by the name of Digital Karma. The Liverpudlian therefore delivers four club-ready tracks weaving himself skillfully through various electronic music sub-genres and styles. 

The EP opens with the title track, a homage to 80s synth-sounds which are combined with an Edith Piaf cameo generating a flamboyant French vibe and guaranteeing the EP an exquisite start. 

Up next is the most housey take on the EP, namely Don’t Call The Dr. The lush 4/4 bassline in addition to the robotic vocals as well as the inclusion of rolling triplets in the track’s lows and the overall rather minimalistic approach turn the track to a magic bullet for the floors.

The B-side starts with Liquid Gold, probably the slower and more melodic version of the A2. Liquid Gold comes in with super sweet sung vocals, a lower BPM as the previous tracks and spaced out elements in reference to the EPs title Digital Karma, as latter always strikes back and here it hits audience hard.

Ultimately there’s (S.O.M.) or the most techy track of the EP. With a stamping yet groovey bassline, its vocoder-led ode to Liverpool and a memorable chord-sequence (S.O.M.) offers another musical facet of Brent, who manages to take his listeners all the way through different (sub)genres yet remains true to his style.

Accomplished UK mainstay J1Mi launches the long awaited Beyonders label with a fantastic first EP that captures the eclectic nature of his sound.

J1mi aka James Hadfield has been making all manner of sounds for years - both solo and as one half of Lizards - from house to disco, Balearic to techno, and always on revered labels like MeMeMe, Not An Animal, Leng, Futureboogie and Phonica. He is part of the Beyonders collective that was started by Jason and Mark Goodings of 90’s pioneering breaks and drum and bass duo Hidden Agenda. The collective is now back after a hiatus following Mark's tragic passing in 2016 and is as fruitful as ever with members including James as well as Mal Sharp and Nick Grimes and now a new label.

James continues to host Beyonders Present events in his hometown of Newcastle and has played at the likes of Glastonbury, Stowaway and Pikes this year, as well as across Europe in the past. Luke Una and Man Power are big supporters of his work and this is the first EP from the collective and label, with the following four all mastered and ready to go over the next year.

The brilliant 'Sixes Now' has a menacing synth screwing about the mix before percussive grooves and elastic bass arrive to lock you into a dark disco groove full of menace and suspense. The thumping 'Modern Maze' is another hugely inventive sound with rickety rhythms, erotic vocal coos and wiry synths. A bewitching breakdown brings acoustic guitars and places the vocal front and centre before the punchy house kicks come back once more.
'Desire' featuring Crazy P vocalist Danielle Moore is an indie disco cut with jazzy chords and playful funk riffs that lift the spirits and cruise on smooth grooves. Closer 'Japanese Kipling' is a prickly brew with off-grid hots and vocal sounds, distant hits of melody and dubby rhythms that are wonderfully intoxicating.

This standout first EP very much sets the scene for what is sure to be a crucial UK label.

PREMIERE : J1Mi (Beyonders) - Modern Maze

Exclusive: Star_Dub - Voodub_5

Making a welcome return to the DUBWAX/ RAWAX label is Matt Star, aka Star_Dub, delving further into his bass-heavy sonic explorations after 2021's initial Voodub EP.

As with the first EP, this second offering simply has numbered track titles, following tracks 1-4 on the first 12". So let's start at Voodub_5! As you'd expect, there is a sumptuous amount of delay-laden warmth on the track, but there's much more too. The beats are crisp, the synths are fizzing with energy, the percussion has a lovely clubby swing especially in the latter stages of the track. The FX sounds which run through the track give an underwater vibe to some of the sounds, which creates a supremely tripped-out added flow. A superb opening track to set the scene. 

Voodub_6 is a much deeper affair altogether, the emphasis very heavily shifted to the classic dub flavours. The kicks and bass are amazingly low, there is almost no to-end percussion to speak of and what there is sits very carefully low-down in the mix. The stabs and FX all have a beautifully layered presence, complimenting the other sounds by keeping high in the mix, almost drifting above the kicks and bass. This is truly excellent in every way and a brilliant example of how to produce dub grooves. 

Opening the B-side is Voodub_7, which is ultimately a dum-led groove, the delays working on the percussive sounds, a low stabby bass hitting every few beats and some gorgeous pads floating in and out of the track. The beats have a rattling sound which is excellent, as this carries the track along, despite it only seemingly being made up of several component parts. Another spot-on heads-down vibe for the discerning dancefloor. 

For Voodub_8 the vibe leans into slightly eerie territory, as the light synth sounds and keys seem to move into an off-centre sound, with the kicks and toms subtly rolling underneath. The keys have something of an old children's 'music box' resonance, perhaps explaining the eerie vibe, which is no bad thing at all. Very definitely the deepest track on the EP, it's yet another showcase of club-ready but immensely layered house music, with its cap doffed to the production styles of Jamaican dub legends. This is an absolutely brilliant EP, as it has warm-up, mid-set and main-set grooves, so any DJ worth their salt should get this in their collection.

Red Pig Flower delivers her ‘We Need Space’ EP via Switzerland’s Adam’s Bite thisOctober, comprising four original compisition’s from the Korean-Japanese artist.
The past decade has seen Red Pig Flower’s unfaltering drive and ambition as a producer and DJ take her across the globe to play at hotspots all over, from Berlin’s Panorama Bar
and Hoppetosse to Tokyo’s WOMB, Concrete Bar Seoul, Pikes Ibiza and beyond. On top of this Red Pig Flower has a growing back catalogue of releases and co-runs the Tokyo based Sound Of Vast imprint alongside Knock. Here though, we see Red offering up her
new EP via Swiss imprint Adam’s Bite, home to music from the likes of Nu Zau, Barac,
Cristi Cons, Traumer and Ion Ludwig, a perfect home for her psychedelia infused stripped back house sound.
Up first is the original version of title-track ‘We Need Space’, a merging of winding bass grooves, skippy percussion, modulating, bubbling synths ebbing and flowing amongst one another while a hypnotic, spoken word vocal winds within the groove throughout. An instrumental version follows next, as the name would suggest, pulling back the vocal elements for a more robust, drum driven feel.
‘Separation’ then opens the flip-side with a more frenzied feel via and amalgamation of vacillating synth flutters, dubbed out percussion and bumpy low-slung drums which all dynamically evolve and retract throughout. ‘The Feeling’ then completes the EP, diving back into deeper realms with murky atmospherics, vocal chants and gritty stabs at its core, underpinned by a bouncy stab led bass groove and crisp, crunchy drums.
