Coming back to WKDU in 2019 was the best thing I was able to choose to do. Sharing music with you each week is a gift that continues to bear such sweet fruit and it’s a privilege that I take very seriously. Not everyone gets to do what I get the honor of doing each week, at this little college radio station here in the basement of the Creese Student Center at Drexel University. While so much has changed in the world around us and in the music industry and how we experience and discover new music ; our little corner of the sky seems so much the same after over 50 years. I am glad to say that I have been around for over half of that time since starting my show in 1995. Many thanks to so many of you who have followed me since those early days and were patient as my mixing skills improved and the track selection found its groove in progressive trance, house and breaks.
I couldn’t have made it happen without the generous DJs and producers who have created tracks that have moved me and dancefloors. It was an honor to go to your shows, watch you move crowds and get emotional as your tracks echoed and throbbed out of speakers stacks 20 feet high or out of studio monitors. Guest sets from djs from all over the world helped Politics to share this special brand of progressive dance with listeners here at home in Philly and those of that tuned in on Soundcloud and weekly on WKDU.ORG and WKDU 91.7Fm. Framewerk, Anthony Pappa, Retroid, Hybrid, Steve Parry, Dave Seaman, Sasha, John Digweed, Tinlicker, Bicep, Staysis, Braxton, Marsh, Ben Boehmer, Rufus Du Sol, Sultan and Shepard, Cassian, Jeremy Olander , Nick Warren, Hernan Catteno and so many more.
Here’s to a year in music that has been the healing and propulsive soundtrack to my 47th year around the sun and my 28th year as a WKDU dj.

Under his Shai FM moniker, Jia Liu (@shaifm) creates and plays percussive music with a global orientation. Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, he draws upon a wide spectrum of bass and club, connecting threads across cultures, geographies, and eras. His sets are shapeshifting explorations of rhythm and emotion, from dubby downtempo to floor-shaking drum workouts. His latest EP “Bend and Break” explores these sounds, along with a recent release with SF Bay Area label Club Moniker.

For episode 82, we dive into the vibrant world of a self-taught producer and DJ, @nextdimensional.

In 2018, nextdimensional packed her bags and made the move from Minneapolis to the bustling streets of Brooklyn. Since then, she's been a force to be reckoned with in the New York City music scene. Independently releasing music and curating her own event series, Lucid Dream, nextdimensional has ignited the decks at hotspots like Mi Sabor Cafe and Mood Ring. She’s also taken her energetic sets abroad to Tokyo.

Nextdimensional is the co-founder of Lucid Radio which she runs alongside Dev Moore out of their shared studio in Ridgewood. The fun radio series showcases emerging talent in the underground dance music scene here in New York and abroad. 

Nextdimensional's production is unmatched. She combines ethereal and wavy soundscapes with pulsing hypnotic rhythms. With a penchant for variety, her original works traverse the realms of breaks, techno, and East Coast-inspired club music. It's a sonic adventure that keeps her audience on their toes and her new EP "Mazeworld" perfectly embodies the spirit of her dreamlike electronic production. 

In this episode, nextdimensional spoke to Shannon about her upbringing in Minnesota and the DIY culture in her hometown that inspired her love for music and art. She also touched on her production, her passion for teaching and the inspiration behind her new EP “Mazeworld.”

Hi all! I had an awesome opportunity to go play for MinnElectro up in Minneapolis and be on their Twitch Stream. The location was a super cool spot, a sex shop! I know, I know, wild. But seriously, it was really fun just having a bunch of friends hang around and jam out to some awesome tunes for 5 hours and enjoy one another company, dance, and be in community. We need more alternative non-venue spaces, and while this was certainly an odd one, I wouldn't have missed it for the world. Huge thank you to the MinnElectro crew for bringing me up and hosting me.
