This mix was made using only my dad's records.  Every one of them an original pressing, stuff he bought when he was about as old as I am now--give or take a decade.  My dad never played an instrument really, and my mom always joked that he was actually tone-deaf.  But man, what a taste in music--and in his own way, what an ear too.  My dad could tell you who was playing drums and what year the record was made after hearing the first 2 bars of a song.  Maybe his mind never quite figured out how to communicate with his hands or his voice in a musical way--but he certainly had a mind for music.  

Some of these records were his favorites, some of them are my favorites, and some of them I listened to for the first time while I was putting this mix together--discovering new favorites.

On this week's Cadenza Music Source to Cycle podcast, we head back to one of our favourite musical cities, Detroit, for a session from one of techno’s fore-founders. 

Eddie Fowlkes, the self styled 'Godfather Of Tech Soul', has been at the heart of the techno music scene since it began. Releasing the Goodbye Kiss single on Juan Atkins’s Metroplex back in 1986, Eddie ‘Flashin’ Fowlkes has since gone on to record for some of the most legendary labels, such as Tresor, 430 West, Peacefrog, paper Recordings as well as his own labels City Boy Records and Detroit Wax. 

And Eddie continues to push his sound, this year with tracks coming on Desolat and Detroit Wax, an appearance at this years Movement Festival in Detroit, a summer booking at DC10 and plenty of European dates, Eddie shows no sign of letting up.

What goes up, must come down and while we fly sky-high at night, our descent beins the following morning. Luckily a dip in the pool administers the rebirth we need and by midday we're ready to ease our way back into the swing of things. It's not always easy and you need the right concoction of mellow drinks, good company and cruisy tunes.

At Motel Cools we have only the best for our crew - Aperol and mimosa's flow while tales are shared around from the night before as our pals Wolf + Lamb caress the ears of our weary heads with their easy going tracks.

As accomplished club astronauts, Wolf + Lamb have a bag of tricks prescribed specifically for the morning after. Their tailored tracklist will have even the most morose melons back in good spirits in no time. Before you know it you'll be preparing for takeoff yet again, soaring through the clouds and embarking on another intergalactic journey. If there's anyone you'd want to captain your spaceship, it's these guys.

Well here we go. Another year and another Sunset Campout and again I was honored to play the closing set to wrap up the best party in the world Sunday on the beach. 
I did this one a little different and started with just some of my favorite slower jams and didn't really do much mixing for the first 30 min or so, but I got going after a few tunes and then it was off to the races. 
This one is bitter sweet as we lost our dear friend/brother/musical compatriot, Navid Izadi, one week to the day after this was recorded. 

This is for him.

Shane one - Sunset Campout Closing Set 2018

This week's Source to Cycle podcast comes from our dear friend and fellow Chilean, Dinky AKA Alejandra Iglesias.  A move to Manhattan, NYC in the late 90s exposed her to the heritage sounds of American house and techno music, and quickly propelled her production and DJ career.  

A move to Berlin in the 2000s saw her music soar, hooking up with Sven Vath's Cocoon label, and really starting to have a great impact on the house music scene.  Releases for labels like Visionquest, Wagon Repair and Crosstown Rebels have brought her to a wider audience, and her DJ sets are always a very special moment.  

So it's an honour to have Dinky guest on our Source to Cycle podcast this week, especially as we are gifted with a special vocal set on the Cycle mix ....enjoy....oh, and don't forget to check her upcoming album on Visionquest this April!
