We officially introduce you to our newest family member, Sam Gellaitry. Setting the stage for his first EP, 'Short Stories' (2/17/15), Sam shares single, "Temple", foreshadowing what's to come on his long-awaited 5-track EP.

With initial sounds of the phone ringing off the hook and a dreamy synth progression on "Temple", Sam ropes you in and then immediately hits the listener with an automatic headbanger all whilst maintaining a dreamy and steadily uptempo vibe.

This young man of 18 years is from Stirling, [central] Scotland - where the "culture" part of the wiki section reads one line. Culture in the form of music however, is plentiful and diverse in Sam's case – drawing on influences from Madlib and Jamiroquai to Flying Lotus, Röyksopp, Hudson Mohawke, Mr. Carmack and Outkast. By the time Sam was 16, he'd learned to engineer and master audio which might shed some light on his unique song structure and diverse journey through many genres apparent in the course of one single track. 

Sam marries his love and knowledge of bass guitar, synthesizer and piano with honed production skills to create seamless heavy hitting electronic music that retains raw instrumental elements and evokes a certain happiness and soulful connectedness. With a father who has a background in making bagpipes among other talents and Mum - a former in a band member playing guitar and singing it's really no surprise that Sam's magical ears give him the ability to translate 5+ genres seamlessly into one beautiful song or 'Short Story'.

'Short Stories' defies traditional notions of what it is to create 'electronic music' traveling through uptempo house, UK-garage, heavy bass, hip hop and soul - in 5 succinct stories.

Brooklyn-based Bastard Jazz Recordings is proud to present The Kosmichemusik EP by Montreal/Vancouver duo Potatohead People (aka producers Nick Wisdom & AstroLogical) who had previously created internet buzz through their digital-only releases on netlabel Jellyfish Recordings. Their debut for Bastard Jazz is a trip through the mellow synth-jazz hip-hop style they’ve become known for. 

The EP kicks off with “Kosmichemusik”, a chugging joint with humming bass, gritty drums and well polished glimmering synths setting the mood proper. Next up, “It Gets Good” features Vancouver mainstay MC and renaissance man Moka Only spitting mellow Sunday-morning style rhymes over Potatoheads deep and moody hip-hop vibes, while “Blossoms” features Canadian vocalist and frequent collaborator Claire Mortifee providing gorgeous, quirky vocals over a bubbling, bouncy track with subdued bass, guitar and Rhodes weaving themselves in.  Next up, “Love Hz” is an instrumental cut with crispy drums, ghostly vocal stabs, a catchy bubbling bassline and pulsing keyboards, while “Back To My Shit" is a lovelorn tale of breakup and redemption featuring the rhymes of Detroit's Frank Nitt (Frank'n'Dank, J. Dilla) with very catchy yet deep synth-heavy production from the Potatohead People. The EP rounds off with “Journey”, an expedition the deeper realms of beat music with subaqueous synths, lifting strings, and neck-snapping drums.  

Bastard Jazz will also be releasing a limited edition 7” from this project featuring “Love Hz” and “Back To My Shit” on Valentine’s Day for all the heart-breakers and/or broken hearted. 


Potatohead People - Blossoms ft. Claire Mortifee

Limited edition blue vinyl 7” (1000 copies only) exclusively for Record Store Day.  Features two tracks from 2 remarkable concerts at Melbourne Recital Centre in November 2011 and The Barbican Centre, London in January 2010 celebrating the legacy of one of England’s most revered singer/songwriters, Nick Drake.  

Melbourne duo, Luluc lend a potent melancholia to Drake’s ‘Things Behind The Sun’ (from his third and final 1972 album ‘Pink Moon’) whilst exclusive to this 7”, the highly acclaimed Irish singer Lisa Hannigan presents an evocative rendition of ‘At The Chime Of A City Clock’ (from his second, ‘Bryter Layter,’ 1970).  

‘Things Behind The Sun’ is taken from the forthcoming album, ‘Way To Blue : The Songs Of Nick Drake’ (released 15th April 2013).  
Luluc’s forthcoming album was produced by Aaron Dessner of The National.  

Nick Drake is an unlikely romantic hero. In the 1970s he was a minor English singer and songwriter who peddled a lyrical brand of introspection that earned him a small but devoted following and few record sales. Dogged by depression and embittered by his lack of success, he died of an overdose in 1974, virtually unknown and unnoticed. He left an amazing legacy - a handful of recordings of his sparsely beautiful songs across just three albums, less than two hours of music. But over the ensuing decades, the enduring potency of these songs has ensured Drake's reputation as one of the UK's truly great musical talents.
