A couple of months ago, we picked out our <a href="http://www.stampthewax.com/2013/08/05/top-five-fela-kuti-reworks/" target="_blank">Top Five Fela Kuti Reworks</a> to mark the 16th anniversary of his death. The overwhelming response was confirmation of the feeling that had compelled us to write the feature; that Fela's musical legacy still resonates strongly today. Another testament of this is Red, Hot & Fela, a new compilation marking the 75th anniversary of Fela's birth, containing 13 interpretations by ?uestlove, tUnE-yArDs, Spoek Mathambo, Nneka, Tony Allen and Chance The Rapper. Our standout, however, was an interpretation of 'Sorrow, Tears & Blood' by a selection of names who were initially a little less familiar: Grammy award-winning string ensemble Kronos Quartet and TV On The Radio's Kyp Malone and Tunde Adebimpe.

Kronos Quartet & Stuart Bogie - Sorrow, Tears & Blood (STW Premiere)

Going way back to the turn of the millennium with my brother Chris Annibell aka Osiris & Mino Cinelo. Here was our typical day in Brooklyn 2000. I was making coffee's at The Bergen Beat Cafe, Brooklyn. Chris comes over we talk shop for a few hours about music, parties, politics. We go to Pizzatown on 5th ave, grab 2 slices each & talk shop with Nick & Vinny. Then we walk go to Chris' house with some samples, flip on the MPC 2000 to chop samples & mess with beats... bring those back to my place & mess with the ASR-10 keys. Lastly, we record it all to my VS-880 about 50 times turning things up & then down & then up again. Lastly, we record Mino Cinelu when everyone was out of the apartment & things were quiet.  We mix it all down again & again until it was time to master it at Ron's Atlantic West Studios. Then, test it in the car & in the clubs about a week... make more changes & make the artwork & the jump photos! "Ocote Soul Sounds" is a project by Grammy Award winner Adrian Quesada and Tony Award winner Martin Perna. Their fourth collaboration, "Taurus," features vocal collaborations with fellow ESL Music regulars Natalia Clavier, Sitalil, Verny Varela and Chico Mann. The record was produced by Eric Hilton of Thievery Corporation, and has been featured on the radio through Distiller Promotions.

"Waterfalls In Tanzania" is the 1st track from his upcoming EP - STARFISH releasing on April 15th, in collaboration with the talented Berlin based NZ producer/DJ Rodi Kirk. The sampled voices are the Children of the Tanzanian Wagogo Tribe recorded by Polo Vallejo who spent almost 20 years with the Wagogo people, transcribing, analysing & writing down their musical heritage in several works yet to be released.

Mieux is a young upcoming duo from Vienna known from their Boiler Room live performance or their debut EP on Up My Alley! With Technotrap they contribute a playful and dreamy uptempo tune that cleverly balances a straight-forward driven beat with harmonic and repetitive melodic figures.

Label head Dusty joins the EP with a slow-house MPC jam called Heavy Lights. After a dreamy intro the track soon fades into a hypnotic direction based on percussive vibes, big bottom samples and heavy hitting snares.

Todd Simon's arrangement, blending multiple versions of a classic for his 21-piece ensemble featuring himself on Flügelhorn and Alan Lightner on Steel Drums. Recorded live to tape in an 80 year-old studio located in the heart of Hollywood.

The fourth release on DISCOVERY Recordings comes from Analog Players Society, a melting pot of musicians led by Amon Drum at The Hook Studio in Brooklyn. 

Coule'Ba is a West African tune featuring the amazing vocal talent of Missia Saran Dibate of Guinea. We hoped to get it last year but the studio and surrounding area were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy (bitch). Amon and his fam spent the following months helping alongside the Red Hook Initiative with those even less fortunate in the area. By the time we got the record ready, it seemed only natural to donate the profits to the organization that did so much for Red Hook during that time.

500 copies, hand stamped bright red 7" vinyl - available late May.
