ZZK Records Presents ZZK Sound Vol. 4

Born out of an underground Buenos Aires party and first launched in 2008, ZZK Records has spent more than a decade at the forefront of Latin American music, carving out space for artists putting a futuristic (and often electronic) spin on classic rhythms and folklore traditions. Along the way, the label spread across the globe and helped launch a few stars—Nicola Cruz, Chancha Vía Circuito, La Yegros and Son Rompe Pera among them—but ZZK’s search for new artists, sounds and perspectives is never complete.

ZZK Sound Vol. 4 brings together a fresh crop of talent from across Latin America, along with a pair of choice selections from veteran acts Maga Bo (Brazil) and Tremor (Argentina). Compiled by ZZK co-founder DJ Nim—the label’s original A&R (and Chancha Vía Circuito’s older brother), he’d actually taken a five-year hiatus from the project prior to 2020—the compilation’s origins can be traced back to the early days of the pandemic. As the world went into lockdown, he put out a call for submissions, and within three months, he’d received more than 1000 tracks. Nim literally listened to them all, whittling the pile down to his 11 favorites, and after hearing his selections, Grant C. Dull—another ZZK co-founder, who runs the label’s day-to-day operations—couldn’t believe his ears. Nim had done it again. There were no notes, and no changes to the tracklist. ZZK Sound Vol. 4 was quickly put into production.

While previous ZZK Sound compilations were primarily focused on the club, Vol. 4 follows a deeper, more introspective path. It’s not an ambient record—no ZZK release would be complete without drums—but the hypnotic rhythms here are far more concerned with the collective unconscious than the dancefloor.
Opening with spellbinding tracks from Pawkarmayta and QOQEQA—both hailing from Perú—the compilation immediately exudes a sort of ritual magic, calling upon both African and indigenous musical traditions while tapping into modern electronic music and a uniquely Latin sense of mysticism. Sebuky, a native Ecuadorian currently stationed in Barcelona, adds a bit more low-end heft to the proceedings, and that percussive weight continues through the similarly transportive contributions of Mangle (Colombia), Cruzloma (Ecuador) and Selvagia (Perú/Argentina via México).

Elsewhere, Yoyoyo transforms the cueca music of his native Chile, Akilin enlists American rapper Bomani Armah to help him explore Afro-Venezuelan traditions and Maga Bo’s “Cadê Zé”—the first Brazilian track to ever appear on a ZZK release—is a bass-loaded (albeit undeniably spiritual) banger. Galo Vermelho (Argentina) delivers a polyrhythmic lesson in digital folklore, following in the footsteps of Buenos Aires outfit Tremor—one of the first acts ever signed to ZZK—who close out the compilation with a rousing bit of almost Lynchian revelry.

At this point, few music fans need to be sold on the appeal of Latin music, but ZZK, which has been operating in this sphere since long before the genre became the “next big thing,” is dedicated to the idea that the potency of these sounds extends well beyond the pop charts. Hopping between continents and recontextualizing rhythmic lineages that date back centuries, ZZK Sound Vol. 4 is both an arresting snapshot of Latin America’s electronic avant garde and a thrilling preview of its next wave.

ZZK Sound Vol. 4 will be released on May 20th, 2022 on vinyl and streaming platforms.

About "El hombre caimán"

"El hombre caimán" (Folcore 138) "The alligator man" is an album that seeks to be influenced by the landscapes, traditions and legends of Colombia, interpreted from the sounds of electronic folk with cinematic and psychedelic touches very much in the vein of Thub. Among the songs on the album, "El hombre caimán", "Alborada", "Mientras duermen" and the singles, already released "Darién" and "Sensible" stand out.

About Thub

Thub was born as a proposal of music fusion between the Colombian folk sounds and the techniques of creation and production of western modern music, using synthesizers, samplers, and drum machines as tools to create a colored contour that travels between the rhythms of cumbia and the textures of modern electronic music.

In 2017 Thub released his first album "En el trópico" through Folcore Records and in 2018 he released the EP "Tierra de Nadie" in which you can feel a rhythmic change marked by experiencing other cadences and other tempos.

After a while and through the experimentation of a new performance, the third musical proposal is released in 2022 under the name of "El Hombre Caimán", a work of more than two years of creation, in which a high influence of Bass Music is heard and the asynchronous rhythms that give a unique character to each track and that seek to recreate environments and situations very typical of Colombia halfway between downtempo and midtempo.

"El hombre caimán" (Folcore 138) es un álbum que busca influenciarse de los paisajes, tradiciones y leyendas de Colombia, interpretados desde las sonoridades del folk electrónico con toques cinemáticos y psicodélicos muy propios de Thub. Entre los temas que componen el disco se destacan "El hombre caimán", "Alborada", "Mientras duermen" y los singles que ya se adelantaron al lanzamiento "Darién" y "Sensible".

Melodías, ritmos y atmósferas inigualables, cadenciosos y hasta nostálgicos, se presentan sobre sólidas báses electrónicas matizadas con arreglos dub y minimal.

Acerca de Thub

Thub nace como una propuesta de musica fusión entre los sonidos folclóricos colombianos y las técnicas de creación y producción de la música moderna occidental, haciendo uso de sintetizadores, samplers y cajas de ritmos como herramientas para crear un contorno coloreado que viaja entre los ritmos de la cumbia y las texturas de la música electrónica moderna.

En 2017 Thub lanza su primer álbum “En el trópico” a través del sello Folcore Records y al año siguiente hace el lanzamiento de un EP titulado “Tierra de Nadie” en el cual se aprecia un cambio rítmico marcado por experimentar otras cadencias y otros tempos.

Luego de un tiempo y a través de la experimentación de un nuevo performance, nace la tercera propuesta para 2022 llamada "El Hombre Caimán", un trabajo de más de dos años de creación, en el cual se escucha una alta influencia de la Bass Music y los ritmos asincopados que le dan un caracter único a cada track y que buscan recrear ambientes y situaciones muy propias de Colombia a medio camino entre el downtempo y el midtempo.

At the nexus where modern/future dub/club science meets the wisdom of the griots through the centuries lies "Horizons," a Sicilian-meets-Senegalese collaboration that digs up magic from deep in the seas that separates continents. Jah Sazzah's signature dub productions meet head-on with Senegalese musicians and singers such as the cousins Abramo Laye Senè and Bara Gianie on the track "Ndaga," which is only the tip of the iceberg of the dancefloor magic achieved on these very successful Africa-meets dub/house collaborations. Music without limits where the horizon is only the beginning.

“Bululú” is an incendiary bass-heavy banger made for dance floors from Toronto to Timbuktu.  With influences of afrohouse, kuduro and zouk music, this infectious floor-burner seethes with compelling percussion, interlocking bass, horn stabs and a rhythmic vocal hook that anchors the groove.  

“Bululú” is a slang term in Venezuela for a large, noisy crowd of people, and the frenetic energy of this track brings to mind a sweaty, moving mass of people.  A perfect showcase of the higher energy side of Yemanjo’s sound, look to hear this one playing on repeat at summer festivals worldwide in 2024.

A tropical summer anthem, "Limones" started as a jam session between artists Earthtones, Oliwa & Numu. What began in a shack in the mountains traveled to Guapi, Colombia to enlist the vocal stylings of Semblanzas Del Rio Guapi (Discos Pacifico), with addl. songwriting & vocal production by Cerrero.  Pitch percussion, 909 drums, synths, and folkloric voices weave a tropical tapestry in this mid-tempo love song.  DJ's, don't sleep!

ZZK Records Presents: Cruzloma’s Plegaria

Plegaria (Prayer) is the first single from Cruzloma's EP "Mitos y Ritos" (Myths and Rituals). This song creates a bridge between "bambuco," a traditional music genre from the province of Esmeraldas, located on the northern coast of Ecuador and electronic music, specifically Latin club.

The single is presented as a timeless collaboration, perhaps imagined, with a singer who would have already passed away by the time Plegaria was created. Inspired by Catalina Quintero's singing, both by her melodies and her lyrics, the track was built around an acapella sample of her voice. The original song can be found under the name 'Amigo - MI Amigo' (Friend - My Friend), on the album 'Marimba Magia' by Papá Roncón and Katanga. Bambuco has a strong presence in this album, inspiring the connection that Cruzloma expands upon, bringing their own interpretation of the genre into the equation through a blend of its rhythmic elements with those of dembow.

In Plegaria, Quintero's voice, processed with autotune, sings a poem to her beloved friend, who is represented in the video by the love and religious devotion characteristic of the Catholic faith. The track alludes to the relationship between rituals and prayers, where prayers are presented both as petitions and promises.

Cruzloma represents a quest for reconciliation with local musical languages from their position as Ecuadorian producers influenced by genres such as reggae and electronic music, and in the case of Plegaria, by dembow and club. This reconciliation appears during the creation of this track through not only a rhythmic focus on bambuco but also an instrumental one. The bambuco, as a musical genre, presents different variations throughout Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Bambuco in its Afro-Esmeraldean version is what influences the rhythms in Plegaria. Diego Zurita, an Afro-Ecuadorian percussionist specialized in the rhythms of the region, appears on the track having recorded instruments native to the Andean Pacific coast. On one side, there is the cununo, a conical drum made of wood with a membrane on the wider end, played with both hands. This is complemented by the guasá, a shaker made of bamboo or guadua cane, filled with seeds of achira and maize.
By blending these sounds with bass frequencies characteristic of electronic club music, a fusion of folk and contemporary elements is created, characterizing the sound of this EP. Plegaria takes us to a place of nostalgia that later lifts us up with a dynamic flute melody, which opposes and, in that way, complements the melancholic mood of the vocals. With these folkloric and contemporary elements, with this deep nostalgia that nonetheless encourages us to dance with its energetic rhythm, Plegaria presents itself as an emotional club track, shedding light on the "Bambow," an original fusion of bambuco and dembow.
