Rhythm and Roots presents ‘A Guide to the Birdsong of South America’, an compilation of music inspired by birdsong and a project fusing art with activism. We challenged some of South America's most talented young musicians to create an original piece of music inspired by and using the song of an endangered bird from their country.

The result is a beautifully diverse and rich album of fresh new music, fusing electronica with natural sound, folkloric rhythms with modern-synthesisers and precious singing with rich instrumentation. Each song tells a story and paints a picture of these magnificent birds.

Using music as a tool for change, 'A Guide to the Birdsong of South America' aims to raise awareness about the plight of these beautiful but threatened species, many of which are on the edge of extinction. It will also raise funds for those working to protect them. All of the proceeds will be donated to the Ecuadorian birding organisations Aves y Conservación and Fundación Jocotoco, two non-governmental organisations with the aim of ensuring the survival of birds and their vital habitat in Ecuador, one of the most rich countries for biodiversity in the world.

The album will be released digitally and on vinyl in March 2015 via Rhythm and Roots. It will be accompanied by a series of one-off illustrations and post-cards from the American designer Scott Partridge.

Wonderwheel Recordings is very proud to present the long awaited debut album Bennu by Queens, NY based produced Thor Partridge, aka Thornato. Building up a name for himself over a number of years as a proficient and in-demand remixer, Thor’s breakout tune “Gaita Gaita” has been sampled thousands of times by producers all over the world, and has become a certified hit record in South America. A string of remixes and a couple of rare song releases later, Thor’s groundbreaking Things Will Change EP was released via Wonderwheel in 2016 garnering massive buzz and record sales, resulting in a European tour that summer, and a Boiler Room performance in the fall.

Bennu represents a giant leap forward for Thornato, as he showcases his chops in crafting dancefloor gems from the ground up. While the electronic production of the album provides a strong backbone, Thor has carefully selected artists from Jamaica, Ecuador, South Africa, Colombia, Canada and beyond to breathe live energy into each song. After diving deep on his latest album "Jallalla", Lagartijeando returns with five killer remixes from friends and fam around the world of some favorites off the LP. Spain's Baiuca goes for a dubby, driving remix of "Milenio" with a bubbling bassline while Wonderwheel favorite El Buho turns "Anoranza En El Yungas" in to a flute driven cumbia stomper. Chile's DJ Raff comes in on "La Frontera" with some slo mo acid vibes, while Ulises takes "Chakana Cosmica" into mid tempo dubby tech house range. The first single from "A Guide to the BIrdsong of Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean" comes from Belize's Garifuna Collective who interpreted the song of the Black Catbird.

This is the first single from an album of music inspired by the song of endangered birds with 100% of the profits going towards organisations working to protect them.

"A Guide to the Birdsong of Mexico, Central America & the Caribbean” is the second Volume in the series following on from "A Guide to the Birdsong of South America", originally released on Robin's old label Rhythm and Roots. Volume I raised nearly 15,000 USD for two birding organisations and featured artists like Nicola Cruz, Dengue Dengue Dengue and Chancha Via Circuito.

For this second edition we have shifted focus north of the equator and to the vulnerability of bird species like the Momoto Carenado (Nicaragua), Ferminia (Cuba) and the Jamaican Blackbird (Jamaica), birds who have dwindled in numbers as a result of the environmental repercussions of climate change, deforestation and trapping for the pet trade.

For the album we chose 10 endangered or threatened bird species and challenged 10 of our favourite producers or musicians from the region. Working with the Xeno Canto birdsong community and the Macaulay Library, we sourced a recording of each bird’s song. Each artist was then asked to create an original piece of music inspired by the bird and its song.

The project would not have been possible without the support of an incredible Kickstarter community, helping us raise £12,599 in August 2019.

Once the costs of production have been covered, all of the proceeds from this album will be donated to Birds Caribbean, La Asociación Ornitológica de Costa Rica and Fundacion TXORI in Mexico. All profits from the sales of the record, music streaming, poster and t-shirt will be shared between these organisations who focus on engaging local communities to help improve and grow the bird tourism sector, create awareness of vulnerable birds with young people and crucially, provide rescue, rehabilitation and breeding programmes.
