Coming soon: Mitosynth, the new app from Wooji Juice (Grain Science, Hokusai, Sylo Synth).

This is a recording of some experimental/demo patches from an early alpha of the app. Some things to be aware of:

• All I'm doing here is picking patches and playing/holding some notes. I'm not using the XY pads, a mod wheel, or anything like that. All the motion you hear is part of the patches themselves.

• Mitosynth supports sampling and importing waves, but I'm not using any sampled/recorded/imported audio here at all. Every patch you hear uses only waveforms wholly synthesised within the app.

• When I have time to run around with a mic making field recordings to use as the basis of new patches, then you'll hear what Mitosynth can do when it doesn't have one hand tied behind its back :)

• These are all just experiments and the app isn't even in beta yet, so remember things can still change.

• Please forgive my terrible piano 'skills' :P

Mitosynth Pre-release Experiments

About 2 minutes of Grain Science, showing off a little of its versatility, from harsh chiptunes to mellow pads to spooky ambient fx to grungy leads. We're still exploring just what can be created with it and have probably only scratched the surface... and haven't quite finished adding things to the synthesis engine yet :)



Direct output recorded from the app using the built-in Performance Record function. No post-production done — just imported several takes (I'm, uh... not very good at playing keyboards! Apologies for the lack of musicality...) into Hokusai and cut together the bits I liked. Exported and uploaded and beamed to your ears. I've marked the names of the instruments — a lot of them are presets that will ship with the app.

Another couple of minutes or so playing around with the new instruments in the Grain Science beta. The output was recorded using the app's built-in performance recorder and sent to Hokusai for trimming.

Grain Science has lots of cunning programming/LFO options, but you can also hook parameters up for live performance. Here, I've hooked some grain parameters up to an XY pad to do some live grainbending.

I'm currently working on Grain Science 1.2. Here's a little snippet of a "heavenly" pad instrument that uses some of the new features! At the end, you can hear how the instrument is built up, starting from a single sawtooth wave (plus some reverb + autopan) into this rich, evolving pad.

Note that the first 48 seconds are just a single unchanging chord on 2 sawtooth oscillators — all the detail is coming from Grain Science's programmable dials modulating the FX.

As usual, the output is recorded straight out of Grain Science using the built-in record feature, sent to Hokusai for cutting together (I recorded the demo piece & how-it's-done piece separately) and exported to m4a. No other post-processing applied.

Heaven Under Construction

Grain Science 1.3 is due out soon, and this demos some of the new built-in instruments (as well as a few from 1.2 that didn't get demoed last time). There's a new wave shaper, a big upgrade to the arpeggiator, a ribbon controller — oh, and did I mention, the new version will be available for iPhone and iPod touch, too? :)

So, a parcel arrived in the post the other day from IK Multimedia, with some of their gear inside to try out. I spent some time yesterday running around with the iMic plugged in, recording things I find around the office, and then turning them into instruments :)

I'm not a professional when it comes to miking stuff up, and this wasn't in a studio or anything like that. But I like the results a lot better than the built-in mic, and Grain Science has always stood out for the ways it allows you to synthesise based on captured audio. So it was fun putting that side of it to use with higher-quality sound.

These aren't designed to be presets, they're just me experimenting with different effects and seeing what variety of stuff I can make from a given recording. I've marked the original recordings on the timeline -- every sound, no matter how weird it sounds, is based on the same recording (until you reach the next marker).
