@cinebient: Thanks! As with our previous synth Grain Science, Mitosynth supports both triggering single-shot samples, and using samples as waveforms. You might want to check out this Grain Science demo if you haven't already: https://soundcloud.com/wooji-juice/grain-science-messing-around — it demos the sorts of things you can do with recorded samples, that go beyond traditional "trigger an effect"-style sampling. Grain Science of course offers granular processing, which Mitosynth doesn't, but Mitosynth has way more oscillators and offers richer modulation possibilities in other areas.

Has a rich analog sound in many of these settings. Lots of character but seems to have a lot of flexibility as well. Will be looking forward to this one.

How do you create rhythmic patches like this? I can't figure it out.

This is a recording of some experimental/demo patches from an early alpha of the app. Some things to be aware of:

• All I'm doing here is picking patches and playing/holding some notes. I'm not using the XY pads, a mod wheel, or anything like that. All the motion you hear is part of the patches themselves.

• Mitosynth supports sampling and importing waves, but I'm not using any sampled/recorded/imported audio here at all. Every patch you hear uses only waveforms wholly synthesised within the app.

• When I have time to run around with a mic making field recordings to use as the basis of new patches, then you'll hear what Mitosynth can do when it doesn't have one hand tied behind its back :)

• These are all just experiments and the app isn't even in beta yet, so remember things can still change.

• Please forgive my terrible piano 'skills' :P

Early missions to Mars looked for sites to establish colonies.  Because of the lack of atmosphere, caves were searched in order to find places for underground bases that would protect humans from the sun.  While searching a large complex of caves on Mars, a team of Astronauts discover primitive algae and moss growing inside.  As they go further into the cavern, small strange insects are noticed.  Already overwhelmed by the discovery of life on Mars, the team finally discovers an alcove near the back of a large cavern that is covered in bones.  The bones are human-like primates.  This discovery will later be analyzed by scientist on Earth and realized to be the 'missing link' that archaeologists could not find on Earth.

Chapter 2:  Dawn of the Drones

Drones were developed by the military for surveillance and as missile lauchers, and were then adopted for use by police agencies, search and rescue teams, border patrol and private security.  It was not long before film makers used drones for aerial photography, farmers and ranchers used drones to monitor their crops and animals, retail companies delivered products and even pizzas, and hobbyists bought them for the shear novelty of them.  Reporters used drones to cover everything from sporting events to traffic, keeping them safe in war zones, while paparazzi used drones to stalk the famous on a whole new level.  Drones were used to inspect oil rigs and oil pipelines, deliver medical supplies to remote areas, give virtual tours of real estate and deliver parts that were urgently needed in many industries. Scientists put drones to use monitoring wildlife, studying the ozone, and the effects of everything from global warming to pollution.  Drones were a godsend in many ways and seemed too good to be true.  

This was the beginning.  Everything seemed to be going well as technology marched forward.  However it seems inevitable that any technology will eventually be misused.  It can range from the small intrusive abuses of overly large corporations to the invasive assertion of power by governments, or from the purely criminal to overtly terrorist acts.  Criminals soon resorted to smuggling drugs with drones, by air and sea, and using drones for assassinations and ‘fly by’ shootings, and the terrorists transformed commercially available drones in to weapons of terror.  It all led to a greater need for more drones.  They needed drones to defend against drones, always bigger, better, and smarter.    

In the 23rd century it is hard for us to understand how people did not realize what would happen.  It seems so clear to us now that the chaos of man, with all the diverse cultures struggling against each other, would only be magnified through the lens of advanced robotic technology.  War on a massive scale was unavoidable...

A mockup of the intensely beautiful Preludio from Verdi's mid-period opera Attila.

I was going for the sound of a live orchestra, rather than the film score in-your-face type of thing. I tried to preserve the dynamic range you would get from a live recording, so no compression was used anywhere.
