Uncharted Waters is the debut release for antipodean wanderer, Bobby Boomerang, who is more commonly known as Cut Copy frontman Dan Whitford. 

Whitford has long held a fondness for the deeper reaches of dance music, having DJed an ecclectic mixture of house and disco and in Melbourne clubs some years before keyboards and guitars cross pollinated to bring Cut Copy into existence. And in some ways his first solo release is a musical homecoming. On ‘Uncharted Waters’ we find this Boomerang returning to it’s place of origin to explore his reinterpretations of balearic house and techno, generated by experiments with his menagerie of vintage drum machines, samplers and keyboards.

“Where Am I?” opens with the tranquil feel of a vacant shoreline, shaped by glassy synthesizers and distant vocals, before the mood turns, awakening the dance floor with towering jungle drums, acid blips and techno percussion. On the flipside is the title track ‘Uncharted Waters’, whose skittering woodblock percussion and deep analog sub bass sound leans towards the more melodic productions of Caribou and Four tet. 

Uncharted waters is the first of a series of releases for Bobby Boomerang, as this explorer embarks on his next musical journey.

Swick - Sideline (feat. Eden xo)

Eight years ago I was in my mom’s basement with my guitar and the most basic recording setup you can imagine.  I didn’t know anything about music production or anything at all really.  Somehow I came up with this melody that just couldn’t get out of my head.  It was probably the first moment I realized I might have written something good, so I wanted to sing it “one more time for those who are doubtful”.  While writing the lyrics (and feeling delightful), I looked at the clock, and it was 10:05 PM.  Since then I have written hundreds, probably thousands, of songs but this one stood the test of time.  Five Past Ten.

It seems as if in your early twenties, you go through various phases of comparing your life and goals to those of your peers, trying to find some kind of balance between what you're supposed to be doing while figuring out what you actually want to do. Overridden by this very-human and age appropriate anxiety in the constantly chaotic atmosphere which New York seems to provide, RÉN escaped to Santa Cruz, CA for a little R&R. While there, she drove past a sign at a bakery that said "Relax, you've got plenty of time". In that moment, a weight was lifted (and a cupcake was eaten) and instead of dwelling on all of the day's worries and jealousies, RÉN channeled that energy and the wise baker's advice into the foundation of her next pop feel-good, yet always introspective jam "Into the Unknown". Complementary in wisdom to her debut single "Time", the song is an escape and much-needed reminder to let go of those aspects of life you will never have control over. In a way it embodies the core concept of RÉN - to be true to yourself, stop comparing yourself to others, channel your stress into positive energy, and create changes you long for so that you can live fully, 'let go' of everything holding you back and go 'Into the Unknown'.

One of the main reasons I started RAC was out of frustration with the current remix scene. I was just plain bored with the lack of variety at the time. Things have definitely come along just in the past year or so with more and more bands remixing each others songs. I strive to create remixes for music lovers who want to hear the song re-invented, not just re-interpreted and chopped up. I hope people experience the original songs in a different way that not only complements the original, but takes them somewhere else.

The idea behind RAC Vol 1 was simply to celebrate that idea by compiling songs that we felt should flow together, and just like most DJs create an in-depth organic mixtape of sorts without the need to stick to particular genre. I love all of the bands included and it’s probably the only “mix” on which you’d hear both Robbers On High Street and Chromeo. One of the main criteria when choosing the bands was the variety intended, but above all, the quality of the original songs. Many artists have remix albums that are simply collections of past work, but this one was built up from the start for this purpose.
