It was commissioned by Balanescu String Quartet with financial assistance from Greater London Arts. First performance: March 1988, Donmar Warehouse Theatre, London by the Balanescu Quartet.

New extended versions (with piano replacing the harp) premiered in Japan by Ensemble Contemporary, Tokyo on 11 December 2001 at Keyaki Hall, Tokyo and Chimeria Ensemble at The University of York in 2004.
