I'm a London-based composer working across both acoustic and electronic music, often combining live instrumentalists and singers with richly textured electronics to create hypnotic and all-enveloping soundworlds.

My music has been commissioned by Sky Arts, the Union Chapel, V&A, Royal Opera House and East London Dance, and supported by Bristol Old Vic, Ovalhouse, Spitalfields Music and Snape Maltings. I'm currently Composer-in-Residence at Handel & Hendrix in London and also an Associate of the LSO Soundhub scheme. My recent work has included pieces for Eliza McCarthy, James McVinnie, Daniel Pioro & Liam Byrne through my concert series SOLO and larger scale works for the London Contemporary Orchestra and Crash Ensemble.

In theatre, I work with a variety of companies to create sound design and original music. My work on Remnants by Erratica was nominated for the Best Sound Design award at the 2017 Off West End Theatre Awards and Sister - a collaboration with director Rebecca Hanbury as Hanbury & Groves - premièred to critical acclaim at Ovalhouse last Autumn.

Rebecca and I collaborate on a wide range of projects and are currently Open Space artists at Snape Maltings where we’re working on our next music theatre work alongside a nationwide choral songbook commissioned by Sky Arts.

My music has been presented at the Royal Opera House, V&A, Union Chapel, Rich Mix, Ovalhouse, National Theatre Studio, Stratford Circus, VAULT Festival, Soho Theatre, Battersea Arts Centre, Somerset House, King's Place, The Cockpit and Nonclassical, broadcast on NTS Radio, Resonance FM and BBC Radio 6 Music, and released on influential Icelandic label Bedroom Community.

Alex has been awarded the Paul Hindemith Prize, and Ivor Novello Composer He was nominated for the Gaudeamus Award for 2022 and was elected to the 9th International Composition Seminar and awarded a commission ILOLLI-POP for Improviser and Ensemble which he played with Ensemble Modern. He has been awarded by the London Sinfonietta’s Writing the Future commission CANDYFOLK- SPACE-DRUM  and has won the RPS Royal Philharmonic Society Composition Prize, DANKWORTH JAZZ prize for composition BYE and was made a London Symphony Orchestra Panufnik Composer. Alex played and recorded his concerto OD ODY PINk’d for Jazz Musician and Royal National Scottish Orchestra (RSNO). He was a Leverhume Art Scholar with the London Philharmonic Orchestra 2016-2017: NOW WE ARE DUH-DUR and has been awarded the Harriet Cohen Memorial Music Award for his compositions. His piece SPAKE represented the UK in the Orchestral section of the International Society of Contemporary Music (ISCM). He is a commissioned contributor to John Zorn’s Arcana X 2021. He has written six operas including NOGGIN and the WHALE (Massed forces including 500 young instrumentalists and singes) FOR the LOVE of THORNSTIEN SHIVER hosted by English National Opera and Helios Collective, BEL and the DRAGON as part of the Tête à Tête opera festival, the EQUIVOCAL HARRIET BOWDLER at Second Movement Opera and WOOLF MUSIC at the Forge in Camden and RAVEN’s CHILD for Jacob Colier and Orchestra.

As an improvising and jazz trombonist Alex has played as a soloist with Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta,  Riot Ensemble, Philharmonia Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO), & ensemble x.y. Extensively, Alex writes art-music for musicians in community settings including, innovative ways of writing for young instrumentalists & singers in a post-Roald Dahl world of new-music.  eg: NOGGIN and the WHALE (Massed forces including 500 young instrumentalists and singes), Fly Like a Kitchen, Muffin, Pudding Tummy and The Sound of Magic. John Croft (b. 1971) studied philosophy and music at the Victoria University of Wellington, and composition and music cognition at the University of Sheffield. He also studied with John Casken at the University of Manchester, where he completed his doctorate. He is currently Reader at Brunel University London. Ensembles and soloists that have performed his music include Ensemble L’Itinéraire, the BBC Philharmonic, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta, Ensemble Exposé, Gageego!, Studiya Novoi Muzyki, Distractfold Ensemble, Explore Ensemble, Séverine Ballon, Juliet Fraser, Marij van Gorkom, Philip Thomas, Matthew Barley, Richard Craig, and Xenia Pestova. He  received First Prize in the 2001 International Jurgenson Competition for his String Quartet and the the 2011 ICMC European Region Award for ...ne l'aura che trema for alto flute and live electronics. His Intermedio III for bass clarinet and live electronics won the Prix Ton Bruynèl 2012.
