Oxford-based musician Michael Diamond’s new EP, Silk Road EP, serves as a  distillation of this young producer’s divergent interests in genres as varied as Jazz, Ambient, World Music, and Electronic. The cross-pollination of influences and ideas feels especially fitting considering its release via German label Sa’lin Records, a label which advocates for a holistic artistic experience for each of its releases, rooted in the intersection between visual art, poetry, and music.
	
B-side opener, “Glistening Currents”, unfolds according to its own internal dream logic–– each element fusing together in remarkably idiosyncratic, yet unusually precise and awe-inspiring ways. Keeping in line with his jazz background, the track has several phases, the first being a kind of dark, echo-laden breakbeat rhythm, before evolving into a dubby, synth-washed Jazz-House odyssey with jittery, overlapping percussion. The percussion, working in counterpoint to the spacey keys and ambient flourishes, keeps the track alive and constantly evolving. 
	
Diamond displays a remarkable knack for keeping things fresh while never stepping too far afield, wherein the disparate elements would ultimately grow stale or feel disjointed. Diamond intends for listeners to read Áine Kim Kennedy’s accompanying album-sleeve poetry while they listen. With its cryptic imagery and allusions to things like both artist’s Asian identity and history, the answers provided may not be exactly clear. Together, they hint at the impossibility of ever truly arriving at some grand conclusion about the nature of whatever we seek to understand. The track feels like that statement in musical form–– a destination always just out of reach, ultimately rendered insignificant by the magnitude and mysticism of the journey itself.

About 'Love on My Mind'

If the start of the breakthrough for Bambara was the radically reimagined sound of 2018’s Shadow On Everything (dubbed by NPR a “western gothic opus”), then the moment it truly arrived was on the cinematically riotous noir-punk of 2020’s Stray. In the UK, buoyed by the enthusiasm of 6Music DJ Steve Lamacq (who called the band, “one of his favourite discoveries of the year”), the band rose sharply, immediately selling out shows across the country. Meanwhile, back in their native US, KEXP’s John Richards echoed the same sentiment. Things were set. In fact, tickets had just gone on sale for their biggest show to date, a 1500 cap headliner at London’s Electric Ballroom.

Then…well, then same as for everyone. Shutdown, lockdown, hibernation, nothing. It was a hammer blow. But rather than rue their misfortune, the band desperately tried to turn it into a positive, immediately moving to try to make more, and – they were determined - better, music. The result is the career-high 'Love On My Mind' – a six song mini-album, mixed by Claudius Mittendorfer - that condenses all the energy and darkness that has made Bambara so compelling but rearranges them into something defiantly new.

Not that getting there was easy. With the band’s core (twin brothers Reid and Blaze Bateh, the singer and drummer, and childhood friend William Brookshire, bass) scattered across the US, they remotely pieced together an EP but as soon as it was finished, they scrapped it. In their words, it felt “dishonest”. They were striving for something new and they hadn’t hit the mark. They realized they needed to change approach so at that point they decided to reconvene in New York. Finally, things started to take shape.

By now, they had a better idea of where they wanted to head. They knew they wanted to include a couple of duets and enlisted the vocals of Bria Salmena (Orville Peck/Frigs) and Drew Citron (Public Practice). They also wanted to expand their sound palette so turned to Jason Disu and Jeff Tobias (Sunwatchers) to add trombone and saxophone respectively. They recorded again, utilizing all these new elements, sampling their recordings as they went along, in the process manipulating the sounds across the mini album. The final result is something astonishing.

Opening track, “Slither in the Rain,” all hissing high-hat and spectral synthlines, is a true statement of intent. It’s minimal and atmospheric, foregrounding Bateh’s raw vocals as he introduces one of 'Love On My Mind’s main characters, years after the events of the album are over, a lonely man who throws bottles at airplanes and dances a two-step in the pattern of a figure-8. While Bateh has always been adept at character sketches, here we are introduced to a newfound vulnerability that runs true through the entire album and causes the songs to hit on a more human level. It’s a change he readily acknowledges.

“The lyrics for Love on My Mind are a little more personal,” he admits, “and definitely more vulnerable and human. There’s more of a focus on realism. I think part of that was because I’d become zoned in on photography during lockdown. Being in NYC without being able to actually experience it made me search for representations of the way it feels to be running around in the city. And I found that in photographs. Mainly, Ballad of Sexual Dependency by Nan Goldin. This also influenced the decision to make one of the characters in the story a photographer, presenting pieces of the story through her snapshots.”

From the depths of Works Of Intent’s concealed cache, a new revelation emerges: Mother’s Genes. This sonic artifact is a study in tension and release, propelled by staccato percussion and cascading 16th-note runs. True to the artist’s signature, a melancholic chord sequence anchors the composition, its emotional pull undeniable. As the track crescendos, basslines swell with arena-shaking power, evoking an experience both intimate and immense.

Further investigation into the origins of this work has revealed its ties to TS Graye’s poignant track of the same name—a haunting meditation on maternal strength and sacrifice in the pursuit of artistic dreams. It is unclear what aspect of Graye’s original struck such a resonant chord with the elusive Works Of Intent. Was it a shared appreciation? A fleeting memory? Or something altogether more intangible?

In Mother’s Genes, we find yet another puzzle piece in our ongoing quest to understand the figure behind the mask. As each sonic resonance is uncovered, the mystery deepens, and the enigma of Works Of Intent becomes both clearer and more profound.

Through exhaustive excavation of the lost archives, another fragment has been retrieved—one of undeniable weight. Measure Of A Man is a composition of immense gravity.

“The boots weigh heavy on the mind.” A voice, familiar yet distant, cuts through the haze between thunderous snare strikes and low-end percussion engineered for impact. From the first piercing shrill, reality is distorted, restructured — this is Works Of Intent at his most commanding.

Where the first half opens a void, the second fills it with a relentless assault: sub-frequency kicks pummelling the senses, paranoia-laced synth lines spiralling overhead, tracing unseen patterns in the dark. A transmission not merely to be heard, but endured.

Our latest compilation features seven artists: Mirko Loko, Fitzherbert, Works Of Intent, LEVOS, Hilit Kolet, Monfort, and Marco Bailey.

Mirko Loko, a prominent Swiss talent, known for his work as resident DJ at Couleur 3 and Loft Electroclub, and artistic director of Polaris festival, contributes "Mind Your Step." His releases include those on COD3 QR (under the alias Bel Air Ltd.), Planet E, Border Community, Cocoon, and Visionquest.

Fitzherbert, a producer and DJ, began his musical journey at age 9. After gaining attention as part of the duo Lakechild, he brings his solo sound, blending disco, funk, house, and techno. His previously self-released "Short Trip to Space" is now featured on COD3 QR.

Works Of Intent, a UK-based mix-engineer-designer-essayist and activist, offers productions rooted in the UK underground with techno and pop influences. A master of live edits and four-deck wizardry, he is also project manager of DAYTIMERS and a designer and mix engineer. His track on the compilation is "Erase It."

LEVOS, a rising Australian talent from Sydney, is known for his record label and party series CG Discs, and explosive DJ sets. He also pushes the Sydney dance scene with Jazz Doof parties and performs live as Flux State. He brings a D&B touch with "Hood Oos" to COD3 QR.

London-based DJ and producer Hilit Kolet, a classically trained musician and veteran of Black Market Records, delivers high-octane DJ sets and sharp productions. Her track "Sunbed Tripper" features the spoken words of Juliet Mendoza.

Monfort, the new alias of Spanish producer and DJ Albert Salvatierra, makes his COD3 QR debut with "La Musique." His sound emphasizes strength and precision, crafted for both dance floors and attentive listening, with this track showcasing a more introspective approach.

Marco Bailey, a Belgian techno luminary with over three decades in the industry, contributes "Sweet Irony" to close the compilation. A regular on COD3 QR, his tracks have also appeared on Intec, Bedrock, and Cocoon.

Works Of Intent - Erase It - 1 MIN PREVIEW

Emotional Weaponry announces the release of Visions & Videos, a collaboration between Channan Hanif and Works Of Intent. Driven by a groovy, hypnotic sub-bass, the track allows fragments of Sufjan Stevens’ “Visions of Gideon” to surface like faint transmissions, its refrain— “I have loved you for the last time… is it a video?” —becoming the emotional centre of the piece.

By reworking material made famous through Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me By Your Name, Visions & Videos creates an unexpected dialogue between two audiences: the film’s queer, cinematic space of intimacy, and the expansive world of melodic techno. This overlap is where the track finds its strength — at once personal, communal, and unafraid of crossing boundaries.
