** RELEASED OCTOBER 28TH** A stunning collaboration between internationally-renowned artists Natacha Atlas and Samy Bishai, this album consists of music commissioned for, as well as music provoked by one of contemporary dance's most noted luminaries, French choreographer Angelin Preljocaj. Performed by the esteemed Ballet Preljocaj, the 90 minute piece was inspired by classical literary work, The Thousand and One Nights. Fans will be thrilled that it sees Atlas's long-awaited return to electronics and sound design whilst she continues to draw on the acoustic/classical. But this is only the start. In Les Nuits, Atlas's voice becomes an instrument in its own right, seamlessly weaving itself into the multi-stranded Atlas-Bishai fabric of sound design, electro-acoustic contemporary Western classical music, classical and folkloric Arabic music, film scores, and jazz. In Les Nuits, Atlas and Bishai take us on a musical journey of unprecedented panoramic proportions reminiscent of the Nights itself, guiding us through a dazzling array of narrative soundscapes overflowing with lusty vitality, disquieting menace, ephemeral beauty, and shocking savagery. Clearly, through composing for dance and being imbued by the spirit of the Nights, Atlas and Bishai have opened up a breadth of musical possibilities to find innovative ways of re-telling old tales and to introduce us to unforgettable new ones.

I first heard this song on my favourite Pentangle album ´Solomon's seal'. I read later that it was Anne Brigg´s beautiful a cappella version recorded in 1971 that brought this jewel of a song to wider acclaim. Like much of the great English folk canon, this early C19th song blends a delicate and haunting melody with some stunning poetry.
My friend, the South African guitarist and songwriter Nibs van der Spuy introduced me to Dick Gaughan's masterpiece 'Handful of Earth' while we were on tour in South Africa a few years ago. If I had to pick my favourite version of The snows they melt the soonest, it would doubtless be Gaughan's wonderfully intense and amost spoken rendition.
I live in the Cevennes in Southern France and during the Summer I organize acoustic concerts in the region. For each show, I share the stage with a different artist and friend. After Dawn Landes in May and Vincent Segal in June, I invited Nibs for July's concert in the Romanesque chapel of Sainte Croix de Caderle. I took advantage of him staying for a couple of days at our home to record a version of The snows they melt the soonest, a song we both love!

Ramzi's Story: From Stones To Strings

Reflections Of Palestine is a heartfelt selection of Ramzi’s original compositions and arrangements, which navigate his personal history. As an adult Ramzi promotes peace and understanding through music, but as a boy he was famously photographed hurling stones at Israeli tanks. An image taken in 1987 shows an 8-year-old Ramzi clad in a ruby-red coat and scuffed blue jeans. His small body is arched backwards and in his hand he clasps a large stone, which he is poised to lob with force. That the same Ramzi went on to forge an illustrious career in music hinges on coincidence entirely.

The powerful shot circulated rapidly and became an icon of the First Intifada, the Palestinian uprising of 1987–1993. Posters of Ramzi ‘the stone thrower’ were sold in the West Bank, and the revered Arab poet Nizar Qabbani wrote a poem inspired by the actions of the young rebel and his comrades, ‘The Trilogy of the Children of the Stones’ (1988). During his teens Ramzi took part in some free music lessons. Upon discovering his talent, his whole world flipped sideways, and music rapidly became his profession, his life and, most significantly, his weapon.

Ramzi went on to study at the National Conservatory of Angers in France. Currently he performs as a world-class solo musician and as leader of the esteemed Palestine National Ensemble of Arabic Music. He is also the founder of Al Kamandjâti, a music school based in Palestine.

Reflections Of Palestine is a thoughtful instrumental album that showcases Ramzi’s skill and artistry, and sensitively narrates his extraordinary story through sound.
