UNESCO spoke to Ms. Michelle Betz, who has over 25 years of experience as a senior media development and press freedom expert, journalist and journalism educator. Her areas of expertise include media in conflict and post-conflict, military-media relations, safety issues and rapid response interventions and she has a particular interest in the use of media in conflict prevention and resolution. Michelle has worked with journalists and radio stations around the world including in Rwanda, Ghana, Burundi, Mali and Burkina Faso.

Interview with media and press freedom expert Michelle Betz

Dr. Daniel P. Aldrich is the Director of the Security and Resilience Studies Program and Professor in political science and public policy at Northeastern University in Boston. Aldrich has published five books, more than 45 peer-reviewed articles, and written op-eds for the New York Times, CNN, and many other media outlets. He has spent more than 5 years in India, Japan, and Africa carrying out fieldwork and his work has been funded by the Fulbright Foundation, the Abe Foundation, and the Japan Foundation, among other institutions. Conversation with Daniel Aldrich on Radio in Reducing Violent Extremism

UNESCO had the pleasure to talk to David Smith, a founding director of Okapi Consulting and Okapi Net, working in the domain of communications in conflict zones and fragile states.
Current projects include the development of a regional radio network in the Lake Chad Basin, targeting areas affected by Boko Haram. Radio Ndarason Internationale, broadcasting in Kanuri, Kanembu, Buduma and French, has studios in N’Djamena and Maiduguri. 
David is the founder of Radio Okapi in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and as Radio MINURCA, the precursor to Radio Ndeke Luka in the Central African Republic, as well as Bar Kulan in Somalia.

Interview with Former Director of Radio Okapi David Smith

UNESCO had the chance to speak to Jennifer Bakody, a Canadian journalist who believes so deeply in the many attributes of radio, the United Nations and responsible media that she wrote a book about it! She is the author of "Radio Okapi Kindu: The Station That Helped Bring Peace to the Congo", which honours the achievements of Radio Okapi, a radio station set up in the Democratic Republic of Congo by the U.N. and a Swiss non-governmental organization, Fondation Hirondelle. She lives in Singapore.

Conversation with Jennifer Bakody on the Intimacy of Radio

UNESCO spoke to Mr. Michal Rahfaldt, the Executive Director of the Children’s Radio Foundation, a non-profit organization that works to develop and support youth radio projects across Africa. Michal is an anthropologist, radio producer, journalist, trainer, and academic specializing in youth media and education. Before joining the Children's Radio Foundation in 2007, Michal taught journalism, media studies, and social anthropology at the University of Cape Town. He was involved in a wide range of youth radio projects prior to working at CRF, including collaborative productions with prisoners, asylum seekers, primary and high school students, and other children and young adults. As a journalist, he has contributed to the BBC World Service, National Public Radio, and the New York Times.
