The 94th contribution to our GUESTMIXES series is presented by Acacia Ojea aka AKAZIE, a multimedia artist and DJ born and based in the northwest of Spain. Her activity as a music selector is mostly focused on the post-club scene, with a great interest in discourses close to deconstructed and experimental electronic music. In particular, her mixes harbor a sonic spectrum full of musical nuances with special attention to rhythmic and digital timbre exploration and percussive electronic music,  with hints of the sounds that inhabit or border the piece of land designated as the Iberian Peninsula. So far, her mixes appeared on radio stations such as Offline Meeting Point (Barcelona), Internet Public Radio (México), and Ma3azef.

With a fine arts education and music training in classical piano and traditional Galician percussion, she developed her interest in sonic arts and expanded her studies in electroacoustics and digital audio synthesis while investigating different approaches to sound production and listening practices. Her background has given her the chance to consider the sonic environment a latent stimulus within her processes of assimilation, creation, and artistic research, while also bringing her to value sound as the primary medium to understand and access the world. Over the recent years, her sonic interventions and performance have been hosted by art centers such as Contemporary Art Fair Art Madrid, Centro de Arte Sonoro de Buenos Aires, and Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Vigo in Spain, as well as music festivals among which figure Dantz (Donostia), MMMAD (Madrid), and Sinsal (Galicia).

For our first album release of 2024, we are excited and honored to welcome Sote to the SVBKVLT family with ‘Ministry of Tall Tales’

Ata Ebtekar, better known as Sote, is an electronic music composer and sound artist based in Tehran, Iran. His wide-ranging love of rich sounds and textures is embodied in diverse paths such as hardcore club sounds, collaborations that straddle (traditional) acoustic and electronic instrumentation, and solo experimental electronics – making Ebtekar equally at home in concert halls, galleries, or clubs. Over the last three decades, he has released on labels such as Warp, Sub Rosa, Morphine, Diagonal, and Opal Tapes.

‘Ministry of Tall Tales’ is an electronic music composition that reflects on hyperbolic orchestrations of political and social current affairs.

In this work, notions such as misinformation/disinformation, biased mental states, bigotry, dogma and ultimately corruption are brainchild of the composer in order to achieve a sonic spirit in abstract form.

Ludicrous and distorted human behaviors are told by magnifying musical intervals and entering the spaces in-between, and simultaneously dramatizing subtle microtonal motifs, ultra-fine polyrhythmic, polymetric and polytempic pitched patterns assemble the skeleton of an engine symbolizing various systems.

The configuration and framework of this mechanism represents both harmonious and non-harmonious aspects in society. Rearranging and coloring components of tradition, neglecting moral codes, and separating ingredients of rituals to showcase humankind’s failures and accomplishments.

The composer has been experiencing an immense amount of frustration, anger, confusion, helplessness and fear because of what has been happening in his surroundings and the sociopolitical system. Consequently, the music is contemplations on corruption, oppression and murder.

“Ministry Of Tall Tales” is an all-synthesis based work, dark and melodic with a noise aesthetic.

Following her single release A​Я​A on World Canvas, the multidisciplinary artist sasha smirnova presents her debut EP '…​…​…​shared strain'.
Building on the foundation and the sonic materials introduced on AЯA, '…​…​…​shared strain' continues to weave together distortion, sparse processed vocals and fluctuating rhythmic movements, expanding on the synthesis and composition in smirnova's practice.
As the harmonic and rhythmic passages in the songs on '…​…​…​shared strain' drift in and out of the grid and dissolve into each other, they give space and elevate the vocalizations of one another in imaginative ways of developing and exploring sound, sonic structures and their capabilities.
